Mira Nair's Box Office Hopes

Apparently Mira was aware of how badly NEW YORK, I LOVE YOU would do box office wise. She did have high hopes for AMELIE though.

In a August 23,2009 interview she was quoted,

"NEW YORK I LOVE YOU...i don't know. I have high hopes for AMELIA though".

Its a shame. Two flops in two weeks for one director. Has that ever happened before?

This is a very intriguing thread.

It reminds me of an interview I read in 1987 with screen legend Burt Reynolds.

Interviewer: "Tell me about your upcoming feature film MALONE"

BURT REYNOLDS: "Malone?..I don't know about Malone...RENT A COP, that I have high hopes for"

We all know how Rent A Cop turned out.

I have never understood the Mira Nair worship by Hollywood. Her best movies are mediocre Indian films that don't even have the flair of true Bollywood fair, while her US films are literally like watching paint dry.

Stand in front of a movie cinema-plex, today, and observe WHO the customer-base is: Tweeners and teeny-boppers. They're NOT gonna' plunk-down mommy and daddy's hard-earned cash to see "Amelia," not when "Saw57" (I'm sorry they're ONLY up to the sixth installment of THAT franchise) is playing in a theatre nearby. Kids have ABSOLUTELY NO INTEREST in seeing "Amelia," they consider it to be part of History Class!!!

I think they would go and see it, if the film wasn't so dowdy. The trailers for these biopics make it LOOK like history class. The Aviator did just fine at the BO just a couple of years ago.

"The Aviator" starred Leonardo DiCaprio as one of the most enigmatic men of the 20th century, Howard Hughes. It co-starred Cate Blanchett as Katharine Hepburn;
Kate Beckinsale as Ava Gardner; Gwen Stefani as Jean Harlow and Jude Law as Errol Flynn. Plus, it was directed by Martin Scorsese. The film opened to GOOD reviews, too. It certainly had a leg up compared to "Amelia." Most of all, "The Aviator" had an ENDING. "Amelia" ends in conjecture.

totally agree with you. I don't see much appeal in the cast and the story particularly with Amelia. The Aviator had a huge cast and it's more interesting with many movie star characters in it. now that they have cut Virginia Madsen's role out completely, it's less appealing to me.......probably will wait for the DVD release.

Wow, the Aviator starred um,. Leo, who can't open a film, Cate Blanchett, who can't open a film, Kate Beckinsdale who can't open a film if she's not encased in leather and Jude Law who actually took money away from the BO before being chased off to the theater. Wow, that's great.

The fact is Hillary Swank has actually shown more of an ability to open a film then any of those people in the last 3-4 years. Although not by much.

And for most young people Howard Hughes and Amelia Earhart have about the same appeal. I would dare say Amelia would be more appealing because instead of being a weirdo germaphobe, she was was an adventuress in flight and in terms of sexuality in time when that just wasn't done.

This film could have been a hit if it had been executed correctly, but the deadly combination of the Ron Bass scriptwriting factory and Mira Nair's pedestrian direction will sink it like a rock.

Amelia Earhart IS appealing as hell, which is why it takes a special kind of failure to make a movie this hackneyed and dull about her.

I'm with you, wingsdesign. In retrospect, I'm beginning to come to the conclusion that "The Aviator" is one of those pictures that just got past my radar screen. I'm gonna' HAVE to take care of THAT, probably this weekend!!

Okay, I bought a used DVD copy of "The Aviator," and it WAS a great movie, with GREAT Special Features. I, like Howard Hughes, suffer from obsessive-compulsive disorders, so I was quite interested in the Special Features. All during the movie, Leonardo DiCaprio exhibited certain nervous "tics." Some were obvious "tics" like the need to constantly wash his hands. Others were SO understated that they were very difficult to observe. Like his nervous coughing, throughout the movie. I recognized ME in THAT nervous "tic." I've been telling people, for years, that my coughing was post-nasal drip. Since seeing "The Aviator," now, I know it's part of my obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Like poor Leo (playing Howard Hughes), something in my line of sight triggers the nervous reaction that leads to the "tic." In my case, it's the drudgery of HAVING to wait in a long line. My throat dries up, and I start to cough. Howard Hughes DID carry obsessive-compulsive disorder to OUTRAGEOUS limits, though! I ain't THERE, yet! Thanks for the tip on "The Aviator!"

What? "Amelia" making it to DVD status in just three months??? I told 'ya all, kids, today, DON'T wanna' sit and watch a movie IF it feels like history class!!!

How do you know Amelia's a flop? It's barely the start of opening weekend.

A heart is the only thing of value. If you have one, get rid of it.

reply

Have you seen a commercial for Amelia? I know I haven't. When you don't advertise a movie, good or bad, it usually flops.

reply

Does anyone know where I can find this interview?

Do you watch your TV with it off or on?! There were promos for this movie every 15 minutes. Not sure how you missed it.

on what channel? I've seen nothing.

reply

I haven't seen one commercial for this movie either.

reply

It was advertised so much on Fox for the last month I almost thought about maybe possibly considering going to see it -- and I only watch Fox on Tuesday nights. As I recall it was also promoted endlessly on Bravo too. I thought the promos looked great, but the word of mouth on opening day has completely soured me on going to see it. The promos showed her as very defiant and now I hear overdoing that angle is what people are complaining about and is what's likely caused the film to bomb.

reply

The film has hardly bombed, its opened at 820 theater's, missed the top ten by a few hundred theaters, and has since climbed into 7th place during the week. Also it's screen average is in the top three of the top ten.

reply

I'm afraid Mira's worst fears have come true. Two Movies. Two Weeks. Two Bombs.

I have never heard such a thing.

reply

First off, the first movie, New York I Love You, is a collection of 12 short stories I believe, and so cannot be considered solely Nair's movie, but simply understood as having a short that she directed. Even so, the movie has grossed about a million dollars, and will gross much more on the foreign market and dvds and such. The only film to really compare it to is Paris Je'Taime, the same concept but with a different city, which made 4 million something by the end of its US run, and was considered a success, thus NYILY can hardly be considered a "bomb". Then for Amelia. Although it received pretty harsh reviews across the board, for the most part, it has recouped 9 million and still boasts a place in the top 10, and is 4 in terms of screen averages of the top 10. It looks good to go on to make more money, and then there is the huge foreign and dvd market once again. One should really think before one speaks, or in this case, posts.

reply

Honey I am afraid you are blinded by the truth here and grasping at straws. AMELIE is a BOMB no matter how you try to spin it. Do you honestly think the filmmakers are happy with a $2,836 per screen average for its second week of release??!!

You are clearly delusional.

reply

Poor thing.
