What should have happened.

Caleb should have moved forward with the divorce, bought that boat, use his local hero status as a fireman to invite all the women he wanted on the boat to fulfill his sexual fantasies and live happily ever after.

Catherine wanted the divorce and with Caleb's follow through, found out that as a working woman with no kids she's entitled to nothing. The house would have to be sold because neither could afford it on a single income and she'd move into her parents' house where she could have plenty of one sided conversations with her Mom. She would have gone after that Doctor who would buy her nice things and expensive gifts, both as ploys to lure her into having sex. One day, he'll either get bored with her or tired of the same BS that Caleb was tired of and will move onto the next one as evidenced by his own infidelity. After being rejected by two men in such a short time she'll be even more mentally unstable and distrusting and will never have a normal relationship after that. Oh, and because she's on the wrong side of 30, her window of having kids is closing rapidly and the pressure of finding Mr. Right Now instead of Mr. Right will lead to another divorce. The only way it ends well for her is if the Dr. or Mr. Right Now is wealthy and gets her pregnant so when she divorces him, she'll have a lifestyle and make her baby the center of her life.

Epilogue: The Dr. and Caleb bump into each other at a bar and Caleb buys him a beer for treating his burns. The Dr. reciprocates and buys him a beer and they become friends. At some point they talk about all the psycho wives/girlfriends they had in the past and find out they both banged Catherine. They'll slap hands, laugh hysterically and compare her sex skills (or lack thereof) to their latest conquests. Caleb will invite the Dr. onto his boat with his local groupie following, the Dr. will bring some Adderol and Morphine and the orgy that follows would be epic.
