John Alan Simon?

OK, a little research reveals the writer/director of RFA is John Alan Simon. Next question: Who the *beep* is John Alan Simon? Well, he has never wrote or directed a movie before. He produced "Howling II: Your Sister Is A Werewolf", an utter piece of crap that made "The Howling" look like a classic, and he produced the so-so 94 remake of "The Getaway". Doesn't exactly get you all excited does it?

I always liked RFA, but PKD essentially disavowed it, and used the plot to form the basis of his later novel "VALIS". The plot of RFA as described is strange, focusing on a dream of a singer who turns out to be a secretary. No mention of politics or drugs. The book RFA, as I remember it, had a PKD character and the record company character. The real life experience of PKD, the strange visions he had, features in the novel. Most of the plot is very political, dealing with the Nixon like President, his fascist Moral Majority/YAF type group, and how he may be tied to the Communists. The singer Linda Fox is based on Linda Ronstadt, who was the object of PKD sexual fantasies. America becomes more and more fascist, and in the end (BOOK SPOILER COMING, WHO KNOWS WHAT THE MOVIE WILL DO) people are put in concentration camps, and PKD is told new books will appear under his name , but they will have all subversive political content removed. Kinda like what they may be doing with this movie. Who knows, it may turn out to be great, but based on this guys track record and the plot description, I have no confidence this guy has ANY understanding of PKD, his work, his politics, his beliefs.

In fairness to Mr. Simon, Coppola's first film was a Corman horror flick called Dementia 13, and other great directors like Scorsese, Demme, and Cameron got their start making cheapo B movies for Corman. So maybe Simon will do a great job with this, but my point is that based on his record and the plot synopsis we just don't know. So I hope for the best, but can't have the the same level of hope I would have if, say, Charles Kaufman did the script with Milos Forman directing!

am hoping that his lack of much of a past history in the industry may indeed speak well for him... it very well may be that he will do a fine job on this. i expect VALIS is already optioned (and there was the opera lest we forget) so i think that may be why we are seeing this title produced.

where is the motion picture of 'flow my tears...' for crying out loud!

reply

Good points. This same dude has the rights to VALIS and Flow My Tears...He mentions VALIS as a possible sequesl, and his draft of Flow was attached to Tom Cruise and Oliver Stone but sounds like it has been put on hold.

He buys good projects...then hopefully...for PKD and jim thompson's sake
have nothing to do with them

reply

Any idea how much a dude would have to come up with to get the rights to RFA or VALIS or Flow...?

reply

No idea, but if the rights to Now Wait For Last Year, Ubik, and/or Martian Time-Slip (my three faves) were cheap enough, hell Id want to adapt them myself hehe
