The second half was pretty disappointing

I absolutely loved the first half of this film. I loved the characters, quirky surreal humor and the completely unpredictable storyline. However, I found much of the second half and especially the ending incredibly dull and slow in contrast to the first half's relatively fast pacing and wackiness. Even though the story of latter half had some wtf-moments, it almost completely lacked the humor of the first half and much of it's craziness and energy. Even the silliest moments of the first half advanced the characters' personal stories, and dealt with serious issues in thought-provoking and smart way. The second half on the other hand was way too focused on the dragging melodrama and convoluted, uninteresting plot points. It almost seemed like the writers had ran out of ideas. I don't know if the apparent change in tone and style in the middle was intentional or if it had some kind of meaning but personally I was very disappointed by it.

The original version is 6 hours long, so I assume that they didn't run out of ideas. I feel that they should have left in an important scene about Koike though, it explains her and her behaviour and made me more sympathetic to her story.

I fell that it progressed exactly as it should have. Great movie!
