Paul Dano in VW scene in Taking Woodstock

I think Paul Dano was a terrible choice for the VW scene in "Taking Woodstock." He is very ugly and also a terrible actor.

reply

that's funny cuz he's not too ugly and he's a great actor... so ur a nutjob...

have u seen, There will be blood?

reply

The man went toe to toe with Daniel Day Lewis for 3 hours in There Will Be Blood, and he held his own. I wouldn't call him a terrible actor.

reply

Agreed coolguy. No one can match talent with Day-Lewis, yet in TWBB's final scene he comes very close.

reply

Is there really some sort of objective, god-looking-down-from-heaven standard for 'ugly'? It's not something I've ever much understood. For example, I've never found Brad Pitt to be especially attractive, but I don't think he's 'ugly'. On the other hand, I find Nicolas Cage and Nick Frost very attractive. So I guess I missed the socialization on 'cute'.

reply

I disagree on both points. He's actually a good actor (see "There Will Be Blood" and, a few years earlier, "L.I.E.") and I don't think he's actively unattractive. Sort of an "everyman" look.

reply

I really don't understand the people defending him and bringing up his performance in There Will Be Blood to justify it. He was awful in the film, ruined a potentially good role, and was demolished by Daniel Day-Lewis in terms of acting. He absolutely did not hold his own with one of the greatest working actors in the business.

"I love you, and you don't pay me."

reply

Thank you for an honest opinion. Although I have not seen this movie, Paul Dano is a good actor for his age and experience. He was not right for there will be blood and if anyone cares to know he had only two weeks to prepare for his role. At first it was not set to be twin brothers, but a last second decision was made for him to play both brothers. But yeahhhh....he did not match Daniel Day Lewis acting wise and was actually very cringe worthy in his role, if I might add.

He was great in his part in Taking Woodstock. He's showing he's got a range and we should watch for him more in what he does.

reply

What the heck ever! He is a great actor and I think he's a babe; he's got gorgeous lips.

He was awesome in this!

I don't think the part necessarily asked for someone stunning looking, for a start. And he's a fine actor, IMHO.

I thought he perfectly suited the whole 'flower child image' and I both he & the VW girl were incredibly 'pretty'. His eyes are stunning and in the scene, he had a sweet, innocent look that makes you trust him.
Frankly, I'd have booted the girl out of the van & climbed right on in with him, no acid needed. But then again, I am female.

reply

I'm right there with you on that one, sister! Mmmm-hmmmm! And usually, I wouldn't even take objection to the girl being there because I actually prefer them to most guys, but Paul Dano is one guy that I would have to have all to myself!

Personally, I thought the performances in There Will Be Blood, Both Day Lewis's and Dano's were very mannered, showy and external. A lot going on on the surface - accents, physical tics, quirky line readings - but not a lot of emotional accessibility or truth. The whole movie I was very conscious of watching actors performing as opposed to watching characters interacting. It's a style that worked for the movie, and in that sense I would say that Dano and Lewis were evenly matched.

I have seen Mr. Dano in many films and a couple of plays, having followed his career closely since his mesmerizing performance in L.I.E. I would have to disagree with the OP as I think Dano is a fine actor. I thought he did a nice job in his brief role in the rather unfairly maligned Taking Woodstock and as always I look forward to seeing what he does next.

On a slightly different note - can anyone tell me the song played during the VW trip scene. I found that I knew all the words, but cannot for the life of me rember the artist or song title.

reply

Nevermind. I figured it out. Its Red Telephone by Love from their wonderful (but obviously neglected by me) album, Forever Changes.

I agree with you completely. I felt that entire movie to be very showy and by definition "great film-making," but with absolutely no depth or substance. Daniel Day-Lewis' performance was great, but I thought it was much better suited for the stage than film; he came off too over the top in most of his scenes. Paul Dano, however, I thought was just terribly miscast. Where Day-Lewis went over the top, he went even further and completely hammed his part up, but he didn't have any depth to back it up and make it interesting, and I cringed in nearly every scene he was in. To this day I don't understand the accolades that film receives.

I thought him a great choice. I was disappointed that he had such a minor role although it had a cameo feel to it. The movie was billed with Emile Hirsch as a selling point: he was good but also a minor (if reoccuring) role. I preferred Dano's brief character. Since LIE I've considered him to be a good actor.

ditto man. l.i.e. was fantastic and i loved paul ever since.

is it just me, or wouldn't you have totally loved to be in there with them? like, smashing acid with demetri marting and paul and kelli garner? fun *beep*

reply

I've never seen L.I.E., but I've seen Dano play a fantastic mute in "little miss sunshine", a fantastic preachy nut in "there will be blood", and this fantastic angel-child in "taking woodstock". Now, I want more! He's so good. And yes, I would have loved to be there. THanks, Ang Lee, for giving us the next best thing.
