ending?

What was the deal with the end? Did it fit with some deeper theme that I didn't grasp upon the first viewing? Or was it merely trying too hard to be "meaningful"?
Thanks, I appreciate all answers.

To me, it felt like they didn't know how to end it. I'm glad they didn't go with an obvious ending (he gets her soul for her), but this ending was lacking for me.

I liked the movie as a whole, but I did feel like it could have been so much more. The concept was so cool - very Philip K Dick for me, and I thought it would have made a great big budget sci fi flick, like Minority Report or Blade Runner.

I just watched the film, and I agree with you, maybe not in the sense that this could have been done as a mayor hollywood blockbuster, cause those films tend to be more shallow (with prime exceptions like Blade Runner, but those are 1 out of a 1000), but the story had some much potential that in my opinion wasn't explored.

Still was a good film and with all the remakes, sequels and standard plot driven films nowadays (not saying they are all bad, I still enjoy a well told familiar story, but it's a bit to repetetive sometimes, anyways back to my point!), I celebrate the originality and boldness to make a film like this.

I actually really liked the ending. I think that she knew that she'd never be able to get her soul back and that's why it was so important to her to get Paul G's back to him.

You hit the nail on the head. She absolutely new!!

@bylertarton00 Thanks that helps me make sense of it now.

Also, because she her body had held so many souls, there were fragments of other people in her. So at the end when you see Giamatti walking to the beach, she is on the beach too, because she still has part of his soul in her.

I really enjoyed this film. I had not read anything about the concept of it so it was a suprise. But I thought everyone was great.

I agree. What she did for him at the end was quite a selfless act, because there was nothing in it for her.

Watched it last night and liked it. The ending was quite meaningful. Two souls (maybe partial at that) can connect...

I was expecting a more literal ending, so I was slightly disappointed, but my interpretation was Paul had met his true soul mate (regardless of whether she actually had one). And what a stunningly well-photographed scene that was! Honestly, the mesmerizing image on the beach made up for the lack of a concrete finale for me.

I like that interpretation. They both deserved a happy ending.
