She (blank) because he (blank) SPOILERS

So she left him because he said he didn't want to have children? So she runs off? Not even telling him that she is pregnant, she didn't even give him a chance to be the dick in the relationship. She made herself one. How cowardly was that. At least let him make the choice. It was HIS child too. It just came off as selfish to me. Making her sister swear to NEVER tell him about the child... I mean, if she cared about him at all, knowing he was an orphan, never knew his parents... why steal his chance at a family. If she REALLY loved him you'd think she would not have done it.

Maybe there was more to the book, but the movie left much to be desired with her character (for me) I didn't like her. His decision to pursue her also didn't endear him to me either. But I liked him better. I preferred the war part, which is sad because people were dying horrible deaths.

Book spoilers:

It is handled fairly similarly in the book. She leaves him without telling him why and he doesn't find out until much later that he had a child. However, in the book, you at least have some of her POV, so you know she is grappling with what to do.

In the book, he ends up marrying Jeanne (Isabelle's older sister). As I recall, it wasn't because of the kid either, he was going to marry her anyway, and she told him about the kid right before they married.

I didn't like Isabelle much either. I liked her better in the book, but I guess that's because you did see some of her POV.

I wondered about the sister. It always seemed to me that she had a thing for him.

I was thinking that she was afraid that he might ask her to get rid of it. Also, he was making very little money, so raising a child would have been difficult. No idea why the husband would have taken her back, though.

It was clear, to me, that she left him to go have the baby with Jeanne because she knew her and Stephen weren't meant to be together. It was a fling brought on by her loveless relationship with Azaire. She ended up leaving Azaire on a whim in the first place and she was acting rather impulsively at the time. I agree that at some point she should have told Stephen and I was disappointed that the book finished with the 1974 storyline. I understand the reason for it but storyline was my least favourite, I would have preferred to read about Stephen's feelings finding out about Francoise.
