What was the deal with the girlfriend??

Why did he have to hide the fact he had a girlfriend outside the gang? What's the big deal? Is it a queer gang or something??!

Willy may have known that if a higher-up liked what he saw (and she was definitely easy on the eyes), he couldn't say anything about it...

*Spoiler*

Which kinda ended up happening.

Also, my impression is that he was getting fed up with gang life. He wanted out, even if he hadn't admitted it to himself yet. Having that outside girlfriend was a way of flirting with the idea of leaving the gang behind.

That was my feeling as well. Official girlfriends might become sort of communal "property" of the gang, or at least open to abuse by superiors. Also Martha Marlene was higher class than they were. Remember that she says she's from "downtown" and she implies at one point that he doesn't want to show her around his neighborhood. She's probably wealthier than the gang members are and that might be forbidden or at least open her up to attempts to exploit her connections. Finally, Casper really loved Martha Marlene and it seemed that this wasn't common in the gang. Remember that after he kills her, Lil Mago tells Casper "You'll find another."

MS-13 members are not allowed to date members of the opposite sex that are not involved with the gang. Most of the time, many girls and women fall in love with these gangsters and eventually are intiated in (by either being sexed in or getting the beat down for 13 seconds).

I'm pretty sure you can come up with the rest.

Three Hispanic friends with some familarity with gangs said that the main reason he did not want to let them know that she was his girlfriend was to protect her from going through the cruel & violent initiation process; apparently, there is a similar initiation process for women. Also I agree that he was becoming disillusioned with the inhumanity of the gang lifestyle.

reply

You are expected to share. Ownership in the "familia." Spoils of pirates and outlaws. He tried to protect her.

Can you fly this plane?
Surely you can't be serious.
I am serious, and don't call me Shirley

reply

Wow, how did you not get it? The main guy said that they all SHARED. If the gang knew he was seeing her, she'd be a part of them and who knows what would happen. The leader would be able to do what he wants with her and our hero can't say anything about it. He was protecting her from being raped because he was in love with her.

reply

Y'all have to go deeper. Yes, Casper wanted to protect her and Lil Mago wanted to protect the crew.

If Casper/Willy was involved with a woman from outside the crew, then there's a possibility that Casper has divulged secrets in moments of weakness.

At that point they can't trust him or her. The only way to resolve the doubt is to get both to prove their loyalty or kill one/both.

Most groups like this have such rules. "Pillow talk" can bring down the mightiest of crews when a scorned woman goes to the authorities with information.*

That's why Lil Mago asked "Has he told you about us?"

that chick was stoopid...she prob liked flirting with danger and got more than she bargained for, or she was incredibly naive, my money is on the former.

reply

A lot of those gangs use families and loved ones as a way of controlling you or hurting you if you do something wrong. Willy knew very well that his girlfriend would be the one to pay if he did something wrong.

I got a totally different take, even though all the above answers work too. Remember Casper "was not doing his job" Hesasked several times by Mago about his whereabouts. The gang is teritorially being threatened by the Chavras and my guess was he needed to sorta "stand post" at points throughout the day. Remember they kept talking oabout the Bamba something area. I think he was supposed to be there to lookout. He was AWOL screwing around with that girl. He kept her a secret because she lived outside their hood. I think if she'd just lived next door and he saw her on his own time Mago wouldn't have cared...anyway that was my take

go back to why casper was in trouble... he was supposed to be guarding their territory, but was downtown seeing her instead. thus the reason he had to hide her. remember once they saw her and she said she was from downtown, they started beating him for lying?

Did do you see what Lil Mago did to her? Maybe that answers your question.

You ever heard that song by Snoop Doggie Dog on the 1 st CD he ever cut.."It aint no fun if the homies cant get none". When guys get "courted/initiated" into gangs everything goes to show brotherhood, meaning they have to share the girls(bops, hoes, etc). The girls have to get tossed-up (sexed), by each male belonging to the gang in order to join the click. There is no private life, you commit to revolving your life around the gang. But some who aren't do or die gang members, do keep a main squeeze on the side & have to keep it hidden b/c if another member finds out & wants to do her, he has to let him...unless the broad is a preggie "or" unless he's high in ranks. You get special privledges once you been in for awhile or earned your rank.

reply

In a gang they're "hermanos" and "familia" so he'd have to share what he had with them; especially with the members higher up in the order of the gang. This is why Lil' Mago felt that he had every right to rape Martha Marlene... and probably didn't think what he was doing was wrong. All of the "rucas" you saw hanging out with the male gang members were probably members of the gang themselves who were "sexed in" to the gang rather than being beaten in the way the males were.

Obviously Willy really cared for Martha Marlene and didn't want to share her with his gang.
