I just saw it on DVD and loved it, too. I was very surprised when I came here and saw all the negative criticism.

The only thing I did not like was the confusing ending because I did not understand a word of what the guy from The Crying Game was mumbling. Apparently he wanted Calvin to say the word "abandon" three times, though it was not clear why. His subsequent killing of the girl made no sense. Nor did his own death. He gestured with the knife in front of his throat without touching his throat, as if threatening Calvin, but then he just dropped dead with no explanation. Then Calvin said something unintelligible. And then it just cut off.

Sadly, the DVD did not offer English subtitles to translate whatever strange language the ending was in. Nor was there any kind of director's commentary. There is a making-of featurette, in which the director explicitly refuses to explain it because we "have to see it". Well, duh, nobody watches featurettes before watching the main movie on the DVD, so what makes her think we did not see it?

But other than the really botched out ending it was pretty good.

I didn't love it, but didn't think it was as bad as people say. It just seemed a bit too slow, and I love slow-building atmospheric horror films. And the ending was way too rushed, and hard to hear.
The film had a lot of potential, it just seemed like the writer/director didn't seem to know where they wanted to go with the story. It was a little scattered.

Good music though, I loved the opening & closing credits.

"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."
