An intelligent horror movie..makes you take note of your morals

She was in line to get the manager's job. She had to impress her boss, so she denied the witch the extension on the loan payment. What would you have done? In hindsight, i woulda gave the hag the extension.

reply

same, bc who knows, Ganush may have blessed her instead which would in return given her the promo anyhow. Blessings instead of cursings are of course wayyyyy better.

reply

true! the girl wouldn't have done the things that helped drag her to hell, like murdering the kitten, or consulting a medium.

reply

yes!

reply

Bullshit. She was already given extensions prior. She was perfectly justified in denying her another one. That's the one thing I hate about this movie. It sets it up so the gypsy is justified in cursing her to hell and torment because she herself was unable to make payments on her house. At what point is the bank allowed to intervene and say time's up? The onus is on the old woman to find another place to live if she can't make her payments. It's completely ridiculous to suggest that denying her another extension that Christine was acting out of malice. Why is it her responsibility to ensure this woman keeps her home, and not the woman's responsibility to pay for it?

reply

That just made this crazy witch scarier. You don't even need to do any wrongdoing to be dragged to hell.

Isn't that scarier than oh as long as you don't do despicable things you'll go to heaven allright? No, you can be dragged to hell for any stupid reason at any random point in your life. And you can't escape it. Period.

That's scary.

reply

Yeah it is, but the film still frames her evilness as some kind of consequence to Christine not giving her an extension on her house because she's some kind of immoral person for putting her job before the woman. Would have been much better if the bank had nothing to do with it and Christine was just cursed by some other reasoning. The witch can be evil some trivial and frivolous reasons while not try to claim the moral high ground. The child at the beginning for example was a truly frightening scene and perfectly exemplifies just how cruel witchcraft in this movie can be for absolutely no reason.

Interesting take... I like it; The indifference of evil...

Peraonally, I saw the whole bank scenario as a commentary on the political economy of the time, as the movie was released in the early days of the financial crisis... Predatory lending, careerism and such evils of the civilised and contemporary world faced against the evils of antiquity... Superstition and witchcraft...

So good 👍

reply

Yeah, that's kinda how I saw it. I never saw Christine as having done anything wrong.

God the father would not subject your afterlife to endless torment and suffering, if you did not deserve it. Consulting a psychic is divination. God says it is a No-No!! Murdering a kitten, to save your own life, is also a No-No. She was about to give the button to an innocent person at the restaurant, which woulda passed the curse to them, but she knew it woulda been the wrong thing to do, so she didn't do it. She got dragged to hell because of the evil deeds she committed. If she would have done the right thing (though i don't know what right thing she coulda done to rid herself of the curse) she wouldn't have suffered such a fate.

One scene that I never want to see while eating is when the gypsy woman's body fell out of the coffin onto the main actress and all that chunky yellow liquid poured out onto her face and into her mouth. Disgusting!

reply

Yes! Very gross scene. I remember a news report that was NOT for the squeamish. A funeral home had problems. BIG ones. Liquid ones. Bodies in boxes were stacked in the garage, near the hearses, and bodily fluids were leaking out into puddles. A bloody casket pillow was seen on the floor of the lobby. Yikes!!

reply

Remember, the reason the gypsy woman cast the curse was not because she was denied another extension, but because, as she herself said several times over, "you shamed me". Never mind the fact that the crazy hag brought her shaming on herself.
