Not that I'm any expert on how these things work, but I got the impression from several cast interviews that this show was a last minute addition to USA's lineup. I think by the time the network decided to go forward with the show, most of the original cast were on to other things, so the cast changes weren't "choice A," but were modifications due to delays in decision-making at the network.

I know that was definitely the case with Sam the homeless boyfriend (starring now in Tru Blood on HBO) and a couple of the other cast members I checked on (the original husband, who's now a regular on House).

I still liked the overall charm of the show and I wish USA had given it some more time to develop a following.

No, but USA was had planned to make a series of The Starter Wife (or at least have that option) for a long time after the successful run of the miniseries. They did wait too long, though. It was ridiculous.

I don't think the cast changes were bad. There were too many random characters in the miniseries, and the new Kenny was more appealing and not simply the unappealing villain she never would have married in the first place. Miranda Otto wasn't crucial.
