Just wanted to say Corundogs explanation was really great

And my two cents is you also see it ALOT in the military among the career-orientated soldiers. Entry-level soldiers are roughly the same age but as soon as the soldier hits a high enough rank they dump the first wife for a shinier model.

Scientifically thinking - it has been found (through some psychological researches) that the children of the starter/first marriage will be smarter then the second marriage children who may be prettier because when you marry the starter/first time you marry someone who matches you while the second marriage is made for more aesthetic reasons (and usually a large gap in education can be found between spouses).

Just to add on, whereas the starter wife is usually (but not always) the first wife, she is the wife he has his children with. Gigi Grazer isn't Brian Grazer's first wife (I think she's his third) but she is the mother of his children.

Subsequent wives are generally increasingly younger "trophy" wives, bought, uh, married, for their looks and often, their willingness to submit to whatever plastic surgery is needed to adopt the look of the moment, and as a result, to reflect on the manliness of their husbands. In other words, they are the ultimate expression of male insecurity.

In real life, starter wives are generally pretty well compensated. Molly would have been, too, if her lawyer had not tried so hard to wheel and deal with Kenny. However, she ended up pretty much broke because he lost all of his money on a flop of a movie and THEN lost his studio position at the end of the mini-series.

Well, Gigi will be well compensated from her divorce from Brian Glazer, if she hasn't already. I think she was his second or third wife though.
