sharePart of the problem is that the "punchline" (that the husband doesn't even understand spoken Japanese) isn't delivered until a later scene. If it was done during the initial scene with his character perhaps the audience would have just groaned. Instead, the initial scene ended with cringe and when he appeared again later with the same schtick it was just more cringe.

You have to remember that you are dealing with severely brainwashed humans. They have no ability to think for themselves or otherwise discern a joke from something meant to be harmful. In other words they are extremely weak minded and de-spirited individuals. Everything they are is programmed into them from the education system, news media and political platforms. They are not their own person, they are malleable beings molded into what they are and what they think they believe.
