Only 6 years for murder?

I'm aware the main guy was under 18 at the time he killed Trice in Kidulthood but he only got 6 years for it?

Does anyone with any knowledge about law know what under 18s usually get for murder?

I remember the James Bulger killers were 10 and got around 12 years didn't they?

I haven't seen the movie since it came out, but if I recall, he got put away for manslaughter, not murder.

There are no degrees of murder in the UK. Its either manslaughter or murder. In Sams case it was manslaughter. He did not intend to kill Trife; it was a fight that went horribly wrong.

I suspect he would have been sentenced to 12 years and released after 6. Sentences tend to actually only be half of what they are given.

It's half for good behavior, not just because. If you "keep your nose clean" (or at least appear to) while doing your sentence, then you get to go early.

You are quite right, should have made that point clearer. Although it is accepted that "good behaviour" is quite a broad concept and most get the time off. Its part of the messed up system that we have (in my opinion).

It's only half if the sentence is less than four years. Four years and over, you'll serve a minimum of two thirds

the james burgler killing was purely cold blooded though, not like this case he probably got sentenced to like 10 n let out early

Yeh 6 years sounds right for a young offender, tragic as that is - life should be life. Many have gotten less of a sentence for more.

A life sentence for an adult in the UK is about 10 years, its only more if the nature of the crime is particularly brutal (those involving rape or children).

Our legal system isnt punitive enough for murderers and violent criminals.

he was convicted for manslaughter which carries a much lighter sentence, 6 years is about average for a manslaughter conviction.

If you are under 18 and you are convicted of murder lets say with a knife....you should expect to get around 12-15 years max depending on the aggravating factors.

If you are age 18-20 and convicted of the same crime you would expect to get around 14-19 years again depending on how brutal the crime was etc.

if you are 21 and upwards your looking at longer sentence more like 16-20 years.

it all depends on age really...which is very pathetic.. as if an 17/18 year old is less capable then a 26 year old...
