Who did he work for? He seemed to know Sam was in for trouble, but I can't remember his origins ever being explained.

He must have just been someone who knew Trife, and also knew that Sam killed him. Maybe he was at the party when Trife was killed.
shareI may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure he (the attacker) said he was Trife's cousin when he got Sam to the ground. If you watch it back it sounds like Sam call's him "Larry", 'Larry' says "He was my f-ing cousin".

Rewatching the scene where Jay doing the drug deal with the guy and the girl. He gets a call from the attacker saying Sam got away.
He's trife's cousin He says so when he pushes him to the ground, and cos Trife and jay were best mates jay knew trife's family hence the phone call.
