Joe Pesci and Helen Mirren as husband and wife?

I'm having trouble picturing those two together.

It's inevitable Helen will be doing the déclassé act for so many reasons. First would be the subject matter and the characters of the script. But forgive me, nomatter how much I enjoy Pesci's amusing and violent characterizations, he just doesn't have the range that Helen Mirren possesses. Her thespian skills are so vast she is one of Britain's finest actresses, up there with the very best. Joe Pesci can easily handle a brothel businessman, but could he have replaced Tom wilkinson as George III? I don't think even Sir Anthony Hopkins handled Nixon anywhere near as competently as Dame Mirren as Elizabeth Regent. From the first time I laid eyes on her in George Harrison's (yeah, the Beatle) "The Long Good Friday", I knew this was as mind blowing a professional as Emma Thompson, and that's saying something. Of course, Joe Pesci will have an international fan base probably even greater than Mirren, but for the obvious commercial reasons that require much less discrimination to absorb a Hellen Mirren role than one of Joe Pesci's. Chacun à son goût.

umm..... Hate to bring this up but Tom Wilkinson never played George III

Heh heh. Sorry raven. Please forgive me for my silly mistake. Nigel Hawthorne deserves his credit for such a wonderful characterization.. But at any rate, thanks for NOT being a wiseacre and piling invectives on me for just a silly misstatement. Half the bloggers here would have taken me to task with vituperative vitriol, just to be mean spirited and cruel.

I don't know. After watching the trailer, I'm not having a problem seeing them together as 'husband and wife'. And I'm actually thrilled to have Pesci back!

I have always admired them both but after watching the movie, Mirren just stole every single scene they were in together and almost made Pesci look like a 'B' grade actor, which he is not, but shows her caliber of acting. Perhaps it wasn't the right pairing or perhaps it was the editing as some have mentioned, I just know I wanted more Mirren and less Pesci in this! So sorry Joe!!

I disagree with your comment, Joe played it perfectly. When ever [ first i must say this not directed at you] there is a guy playing the brute, cheater, abuser, or someone bad, it almost always come off as bad acting, when if you truly disliked the character it usually means they did a good job. I feel sometimes we equate good acting when the role requires a soft side and the two styles are in contrast with each other. We gravitate to the more softer side because it's easier to latch on to. This is the main focus on Romcoms as the softer side guy is who most want to root for he is almost always helped by being good looking liked even when most can't act well. What i am getting at, is I try to look at the overall movie and equate how the characters left me, satisfied on weather they were believable or not.

I get what you're saying and I agree with a lot of it, but this wasn't what I meant. For me, I just felt Helen, who comes in with so many accolades and a certain expectation, superseded that of Joe. I don't think he played the part bad at all, and I'm a great fan of a lot of his work! I just wished they'd made him a little, for want of a better word, knarlier! She has such a strong presence and I almost wanted him, at times, to put her in her place. Does that make sense?!

It's refreshing to agree/disagree in a non-violent way for once! People get so when you disagree with them! I thrive on it! Thanks!

Agreed, they played off each other very well. It made so much sense that their characters would end up together.

Valiant efforts put forth by both Dame Helen and Mr. Pesci to make a romantic relationship between them believable unfortunately did not succeed in this film. They are just in two completely different leagues. Let's face it, Joe Pesci plays a great gangster or bad guy any day of the week, but that's about it. Whereas Helen Mirren floats seamlessly between historical drama, action-adventure, comedy, etc. over and over again. Pesci, to me anyway, is one of those actors who you watch because you have to (e.g. you're watching a film for another reason and they happen to be in it) but Mirren is an actor you watch because you WANT to. Seeing them act together in this film made me realize how true that is. Every time Joe Pesci's character was on screen, I just kept thinking "All he does is smoke, curse, and rip people off..." Whereas Helen is such a joy to watch because, even when she doesn't say a word, her face tells you everything you need to know. Her eyes are so incredibly expressive. She makes you feel what her character is feeling. I'm not saying Joe Pesci isn't talented, it's just that his talents are more limited to a particular genre.
