It's not bad but it's not interesting

After 1.5 episodes I didn't care about the mother, the mystery, or who done it. The acting was okay, the sets and plot were okay, but the execution is monotonous.

"Extremely fine". Stellar recommendation!

I agree wholeheartedly with the author. It's not bad, the retro feel is a mix of decades, but unfortunately the grandmother is the most interesting character but isn't a main character.

I just learned about this like two days ago. Is it already available? I will at least have to give it a look, though I've always felt that any time you do Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew, it should be a period piece.

Speaking of Nancy Drew, I know they also recently rebooted it for The CW, and from what I've heard they completely fucking ruined it.

You might like The Hardy Boys, it's not period but is a mix of decades (mostly 60s-80s). Nancy Drew reboot sucks donkey ass.

I heard for Nancy Drew they threw in a lot of stuff that didn't need to be there, like sexual content that just didn't wasn't in the spirit of the source material it was based on. Fuck that.

Your description of The Hardy Boys actually sounds promising. I will check it out.

it just reminds of that hardy boys south park episode...

Just discovered this, haven’t actually watched yet. Did you read Hardy Boys as a youngster? Are any of the plots taken from the original stories?

reply

I read the Hardy Boys in the 70s and don't remember a lot about it. The series has been around a very long time, but I don't believe this story is from the books.

Remembering our conversation, I decided to go ahead and give it a look.

I'm three episodes in and think I liked it well enough to keep going. It starts slow but it seems to be picking up as the story moves forward.

The indistinct time period is interesting. It feels at times like the early-to-mid 80s and at other times like the late 70s. And then there are even elements that feel like the 50s. It seems to intentionally hearken back to multiple eras of the past and I think that's an interesting creative decision.

The show is aimed at a younger audience but, if you have nostalgia for stuff like this, you can also enjoy it if you're older. It feels to me like Hulu wanted something in the vein of Stranger Things and this is what they came up with (though Hardy Boys is more tame and also a lot less sci-fi than Stranger Things). I also appreciate the fact that, in a time when it feels like networks are wanting to sex up shows aimed at younger folk and make them "edgy," this one feels like a wholesome throwback to an earlier era.

I agree it's not binge-worthy, A-level entertainment but I'd still say overall it's pretty good. I've always been interested in mysteries and adventure stories and I also like the retro feel.

I, too, found it refreshing it wasn't an edgy lesbian sex bomb, but I never did finish it.
