Bloody hell

The opening scene of this movie contains a sequence that is so violent and grotesque, I stopped watching.
Truly disturbing. An image which will stay with me.

yeah, i'm not sure if it level of violence serves any purpose. it was definitely verging on gratuitous territory.

This scene is very much reminiscent to the one in "Irreversible" with the fire extinguisher or another one in "Seed" (U.Boll-2007) with a guy and a hatchet. Very disturbing. The level of violence shown in that opening scene was all the more surprising that it wasn't at all on par with the level of violence in the rest of the movie. They sure did start with a bang!

As horrible as that scene was, and it pretty freakin' horrible, I have to give it up to it on a technical level.

They showed it all in one seemingly unbroken shot and you saw the damage actually appearing on her face with each blow.

Obviously it was done with the camcorder locked off so it couldn't move and there were very fast edits while the actress got more and more blood and damage applied but damn that was great how they did that.

The graphic nature of the opening scene definitely served a purpose. It was set up to make the viewer uneasy and put them on the edge for the rest of the film. Whether that worked or not is up to each person.

Truly disturbing scene. My boyfriend can watch anything and even he was closing his eyes whilst squirming.

I must be getting more and more desensitized. The only thing that even crossed my mind in the scene was what someone else mentioned about how well they did the visual effect. It was definitely more realistic than a lot of the over the top scenes you see, which I guess is why it pushed buttons.

SPOILERS

It was neither terribly realistic (she would have been dead and lifeless, including her autonomic functions) within the first few blows, particularly given that it was a large, adult male using a baseball bat on her.

I am not sensitive particularly to gore and violence, as I have been a horror fan since early childhood, but there was something about that scene I simply cannot appreciate. Perhaps it was the insinuation that it was a small boy conducting the murder, and perhaps that is the "explanation" for why it took so long. Still, even as someone desensitized to "child violence" in movies, it was too much. There was nothing cinematic about it, and it was not "shocking" in its portrayal. It was just over the top, and out of character with the rest of the movie by far.

I don't think you can qualify something as unrealistic based on that. There are so many variables involved, and people hold on longer than you think they would sometimes. People certainly survive similar beatings(though of course far from unscathed).

Actually in retrospect I think that was the point. The difference between that death and the rest of the scenes in the film that happened within the delusion was certainly drastic. Yet it also makes perfect sense, as it sets a clear division of the "real world" death with those of the fantasy deaths. (His father killing him at the end of course also taking place in the "real" world, which while not as graphic due to its nature certainly was more realistic as opposed to the typical almost campy movie kills of the delusion.)

The more violent and disturbing the better. Go watch some more ghost movies, and lame ass shock/jump out of your seat "horror."

I thought it was excellent - it just cut away at the correct time to avoid being overly gratuitous.

Felt it set the tone nicely, very seedy. Just beautiful.

Sadly I was being a little over optimistic as was hoping the entire movie would continue very seedily a la Nightmares in a Damaged Brain style :(

Sad thing is that such sh!t happens all the time for real.

I can understand that Klaatu would want to exterminate mankind. ;_;

Wow. That scene really blew me away, because I watched this movie (just randomly) shortly after having watched the real-life video those 3 Russian teenaged boys made of themselves killing a man in the woods, just off a road. The one boy smashed the guy's face in with a hammer, to the point where it was a bloody pulp. You couldn't even make anything out or tell it was a face, although shockingly the poor man was still alive (they did other things with a screwdriver, I won't go into the details because it is horrifically gruesome). I gotta say, after seeing the real thing, the scene in this movie is disturbingly accurate.

It's not the first time a horror/scary flick has included some gratuitous gruesomeness. Is it OK to depict death in horror movies if the special effects aren't so great, but it's not OK when it looks too real? Besides, I agree with Toxiemite, it wasn't for no reason, it was to make the viewer uneasy right from the beginning.

Agreed. Also seen that video of the russian kids. Horrible *beep* people.

Anyway, i saw the scene from Frayed as a separate video on a gore site and i thaught it was real. My heart raced and i got mad as hell at who ever the basher where and i felt so damn sorry for her. Very disturbing, and then i noticed it was special effects from a movie - wth?! Cant be true. Found "the making of" on vimeo and was blown away.

What really made me think it was real was the actress gasping (and the special effects wounds). If you seen some real footage of people dying (gore sites) then you know that beatings/car hits etc often doesnt kill people instantly. They go unconcious maybe(?) but the body still gasps for air, and it can seemingly do that for a long while. You probably dont survive, but our bodies seems to "live" longer than many thinks.

Well this scene gets 10/10 from me cause it disturbed the *beep* out of me and looked very real. I havent seen the movie yet though.
