Is he the widowed grandfather?

Dunno, but damn I hope so! :) Wonder what relation Clint Howard is to Andy Griffith's character, if any, seeing has how Clint is Ron Howard's brother. I think you know where I'm going with this...

Andy Griffith is David's (Paul Campbell) grandfather. He is his mother's father. Clint Howard is his father. Yes, Andy Griffith is widowed.
