Let's get discussion started on this gem!

Wow...what a comeback for Korean Horror. This was a great Horror flick from 2007. I actually preferred this over "A Tale of Two Sisters" which was another solid Korean Horror film. For those who haven't seen it, it's an anthology of three tales based off a creepy hospital...and no, there's no little girl seeking vengeance, either. This isn't another run-of-the-mill Ring clone. This is an original and challenging film. Some I know didn't like it because it was too confusing for them but it's a film that requires the viewer to think. The answers are there to be found. Oh, and the english translation for this film is "Epitaph" and also known as "The Last Breath".

Well... picked up for distribution by TLA, so that's a good start...

i liked it, but am definitely confused about a few things...like Gung-Nam's arranged fiance (living/dead?) and the doctor getting hit by the car...

The movie was overwrought with alternate explainations to supernatural events and vice versa. It was a good-looking movie with some really good scares but it was way too convoluted with alternatives.

Okay, This is what I think happened.
The little girl is suffering from survivor guilt+unfulfilled attachment to the father-figure. The morgue door opening and the bloody corpse communicating with her is either 1. just a visual expression of saying she couldn't let go of the Mother's death. 2. The ghost of the mother who can't leave the girl alone.
After the therapy, the girl lets go of the guilt and dies. However, she can't let go of the love of the father-figure. Her soul goes to the place where she met him for the first time. She takes the doctor with her, who has now replaced the father. That's why he(the doctor) hears the girl saying "I love you" before he dies.

The ghost-marriage story was really confusing. The protagonist/main narrator is married to a dead girl's soul which is revived by his Mother-in-law/general of the hospital/guardian with the help of the bald monk-type person. he has a horrifying out-of-body wedding night experience.

Later, he marries a real woman and has a daughter. His wife dies during childbirth. He marries again and that lady dies too. It is hinted that his ghost-wife might have killed them. For 37 years, he lives alone. In reality, the ghost is with him all along, as we see in the first dinner scene. After his daughter leaves, he says "That's the last time I saw my daughter. that night, I died." In the final scene, After the walk down the memory lane, he sees the ghost again and dies.
hope that helps.

The first story could go 2 ways.

A) Aoi and the protagonist have been in love since they were kids, but they become estranged when his parents died. Aoi falls into the lake and drowns. Mom thinks she committed suicide so she marries her spirit to the protagonist.

B) Aoi and the protagonist are basically strangers and Aoi doesn't wanna get married b/c she's in love with someone else. So she kills herself yadda yadda yadda.

I'm leaning towards A because Aoi doesn't seem malicious towards the protagonist (other than killing his wives)., but also his lines at the end lead me to believe he wasn't as apathetic about the arranged marriage as he made it seem.

The script gives lots of hints that let you follow the various plot lines and time lines. I didn't find it too confusing. There's a cleanness to the narrative that makes it fairly easy to follow.

I love the texture and imagery of this movie. That scene with the lovers appearing as pairs of decorative screens part to reveal them was absolutely exquisite.

Edited to add: I posted the preceding before I finished the movie. The last 1/2 hour was even better than the earlier portion. This is one of the most visually beautiful movies I have ever seen. The gorgeous wood floors in the hospital alone made it worth watching. I didn't want it to end.

"The night was sultry."

While I feel it got too artsy at times I agree. The director did some. Great work with an incredibly small budget.
