What was the deal with the necklaces?--the grandmother gave Shannon one that had been the mother's, but Michael also had one that he said had been his mother's [it caught on the cliff when he fell]. Also, why did this necklace work to get rid of him in the end, when the photo didn't? I'd like to understand this part, even though I thought it was an awfully stupid movie.

The photo was glued to the parchment and was meant to bind the ghost to the spells that were written on it. Those spells would help to cast away the ghost.
The necklace as a personal item of the ghost's that she needed to make the spell work. The grandmother's necklace was person, but not personal enough. That's why she needed the one that his mother gave him, which was stuck on the cliff.
