That never happens in my high school.

I thought this was an Ok movie..(for lifetime), i only watched it for Nikki. But, are some people in high school actually that mean just because of somebody's size? middle school, maybe. But i thought it was really unbelievable. There's a girl in my school who's about Nikki Blonsky's size, and she's very popular, and just about everyone in grade 11 (my grade) talks to or knows her.

If that never happens in your high school, then you're very lucky. It happened all the time in my high school.

The sad part is, it doesn't just happen in high school. It happens in the grocery store, in the malls, at the workplace....it even sadder, is that the people doing the ridiculing aren't neccessarily kids who don't know better. I am in my early 50s and still putting up with those who think they have a right to discriminate against me. They don't even know me!

I managed throughout my life to take extra care in how I look and present myself to others. Even at my highest weight, I did what it took to make myself feel good. I have always remained active but unfortunately have found myself being judged soley on appearance. I am now in my early 50s and single... would love to have someone in my life again, but finding it hard to meet anyone who can't see beyond the physical appearance. I have lost 85 pounds in the past year and half by concentrating on my finest points and quit feeling sorry for myself because I was fat. I would like to lose about another 25lbs or so, but genetically, I will always be a curvy girl, and will probably be a size 12-14 for the rest of my life.

I have learned to not feed into the negative comments and discrimination like I have in the past. I like who I am and have come to the realization that there will always be someone out there who will find something to ridicule others about...if it isn't a weight issue, it will be something else. It is really those people I feel sorry for because it must be very very difficult to be perfect!

GOOD FOR YOU!!!! I just started a diet i have to lose forty pounds. I have alreadly lost 10. Be curvy that's what im going for. You don't want to look like Uma Thurman who looks like a skeleton. KEEP IT UP, GIRL!!!

It happens in elementary school, middle school, high school, and for me, college and now beyond. It doesn't end, if you're fat and female.

reply

i am in college and haven't had the experience of ridicule. Where the heck do you go? Immature University? I am not trying to be mean, just curious.

reply

Yes, in my high school experience, there were "popular" people and jocks who were jerks just because they could be. Not only against people they thought were fat but if there was anything else they could pick on about someone. Poor, talk funny, clothing, dumb, smart, weird name, anything else their pea brains to pick up on.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

this movie is based on what happened in the high school in the city I work in, I can still remember hearing about it, and just an FYI for all those out there, the area I'm from is sububaran upper middle class, snooty girls have nothing better to do then pick on others,

Well, This happend in my school....
There are a lot of big people that are poplular in highschool or w/e, I like to think that I was one of those, I'm big, but in highschool I was well known and pretty well liked, but there's still those couple of jerks that say things to your face or to others when you're in earshot... who knows what they say behind your back. Most of this movie was pretty right on to my highschool (well, aside from the whole homecoming thing) but yeah, I don't know, I really liked this movie... probably cause it hit pretty close to home.... anyway, @Chenie You're lucky that it doesn't go on in your school, but you should ask the girl what she says, it's always seen on a different perspective...

I don't remember it happening in high school too much, but I do remember it happening a lot in middle school. Maybe I was just more in tune with what was going on in middle school. I was pretty zoned out in high school for several reasons.... I have always thought of middle schoolers being much more vicious than high schoolers. Maybe they are just more blatant about their teasing or something.

This never happened in my high school either. Everybody at my high school accepted everybody else--there weren't cliques really. The "nerds" and "popular kids" all hung out together. One of the most popular girls was extremely overweight, and she got almost every lead role in the school plays.

I know, however, that not every school is like this. My cousin went to a school that was absolutely vicious.

I have no doubt that stuff like that happened in my high school. People were just awful! Most people didn't like me in high school and back then I was really thin and actually quite pretty, I just didn't care a lot about fashion so my appearance and my clothes got ripped on all the time, despite the fact that I was probably better looking than half of the people who looked down on me for it. Yeah, that sounds vain as hell but it's the truth. People got ripped on for whatever, if they weren't popular then they'd be made fun of for whatever 'weakness' the cool kids saw in them. Being poor, being fat, wearing bad shoes, whatever. I also remember this girl from my Film as Lit class senior year who was rather large, probably bigger than the girl in this movie, and everyone in the class was so mean to her because of her size. She was the sweetest girl, too. She just tried to talk to people and be friendly and they ignored her or mocked her because she was obese and wore hot pink muu muus.

My high school is nothing like this. We all have flaws, we all have our bad hair days, but we just don't care. I'm fairly ugly in my eyes, not skinny, and I wear the same things every week. Of course people notice. But they don't care. I'm very social, have many friends, they're amazingly supportive.

...all in all, I go to a very positive and accepting school. We have clubs for different religions, even a club for both gay and straight students.

The judgemental ones, well, they're the minority.

My God, where do you all live where you don't hve discrimination?!?!?! 'Cause I need to move there! We have all of this in high school for sure, because people are so worried about a reputation that won't even matter in 5 years.

Try small-town MO. That's where I live, and when I first saw this movie I couldn't help but laugh at how ridiculous it seemed. I thought, this never happens anywhere! Kids aren't that mean. We get "underdogs" on the Homecoming/Courtwarming court all the time.

In my school, girls who never where the same outfit twice sit at lunch with girls who where the same hoodie everyday. The FFA farm-boys party with athletes. The average graduating class is 35.

We don't do prom royalty. In fact, high school royalty is pretty unimportant in our school. We all forget about it the next day, and we only do it because every school does.

I'm in the band and theatre, I get asked how my dept. is holding up all the time. People come to our concerts/shows. And I go to the game and cheer on my classmates.

We had a boy move into my grade a couple years ago from the inner city, and he was very loud and obnoxious. But eventually he realized that he didn't have to show off all the time to have friends. He's really mellowed out, and now we hang out all the time.

But! Don't think I live in a fairy-tale school. It's all give and take. Sure, we don't judge people based on weight or clothes or cliques, but it's very redneck at times. Very conservative. We've got homo-phobes and those who drive trucks with the confederate flag and the slogan "The South Will Rise Again", and all that that entails.

There are days I love my school, there are days I hate it. I feel bad for anyone who actually has to go to a school like the one in Queen Sized.

The OP is right! In my high school, there were lots of overweight and chubby people who NEVER got teased or bullied because of it! There were several who were still socially popular!
