My thoughts on the whole binge eating thing

I'm watching this movie now and I have to say I'm really annoyed. I understand, in terms of entertainment/hollywood/what have you, it goes with the theme of the movie to play up the overweight character of Maggie. With that said, as someone who is overweight herself, I have to say that this movie portrays negative stereotypes about those of us who are not stick thin. No, I am not saying that this entire movie is all negative in terms of portraying heavier girls/women but it certainly had a number of points in here that made me want to turn the channel.

Not every overweight person struggles with binge eating. Not every overweight person runs to food when things get tough. Not every overweight person has bizarre internal thoughts that plague them to the point that they run to food or find themselves battling depression. Not every overweight person spends their days shielding themselves from the "skinny bitches" around them. At the same time, not every "skinny bitch" spends their time ruthlessly attacking all those overweight around them.

I understand the message this movie is trying to send, but I do not understand why its necessary to portray all these negative stereotypes about a group of people.

Maybe I am the only one who feels this way, but watching this movie, again as an overweight person (or so says our society) I am so bothered and angry at the producers of this movie. Anyone else with me?

Yea, you are right. Not every overweight person is like Maggie, but then again, some are. And people who ridicule them are definitely a problem. I am not overweight, but I struggle with binge eating as well (not to mention the bizarre internal thoughts). I can relate to her in some ways, and I think plenty of other people do too, overweight or not. Besides, you can't really say that the producers portrayed only negative stereotypes. There was a character in this movie who was overweight and was still confident in her own skin.

Binge eating is a very common problem among us, as well as being overweight or obese. Yes society judges those of us who are slightly more pudgy, but this movie also makes another valid point: Being overweight can be hazardous to or health (diabetes, cardiovascular disease...etc).

Anyway, I don't think that you should be so angry at the producers of this movie. I mean if Maggie was so comfortable in her skin and more confident, I really doubt that she would be living the life she did. She wouldn't have anything to overcome and then you would not have a movie.

i agree with you, my mom is overweight but she doesn't binge eat ever! she's eats normally but never works out like she use to when she was younger. when she was younger she was able to run 6 miles. it's still not clear why she became overweight.

i have to disagree with you on not every skinny bitch is out to get fat people. in new york at least, pretty much every skinny bitch that my mom passes in the street they give her snotty looks like they think they're better than her. also i have 2 friends who are not obese but overweight and they've been treated the same way since they were little.

not to sound racist but it seems (judging from experience in nyc) white women are the ones who bully fat people the most.

i like these clothes i like this hair, it's not emo it's not anything ¬¬

I do agree with what you're saying. I am very overweight myself, and although I've lost 60 pounds so far, I still struggle with it a LOT. And the thing is, there are some parts of this movie that I relate to very much - for instance, ordering a pizza when my mother had left out a healthier dinner for me to have. Stashing all kinds of candy wrappers and pizza boxes under my bed. Feeling frustrated that physical appearance is one of the very first things that people notice in others. Those are the kinds of things that make this movie almost painful to watch, because it's so close to home.

However, there are other aspects of Maggie's character that are tougher to connect with, like her binge eating. I haven't ever had the experience of the high school queen bee mocking me for my weight (thankfully), but I have to believe that if that did happen, I wouldn't stand behind the building and force chocolates down my throat while I was crying. I've never run home and collapsed in front of the refrigerator in tears with a quart of ice cream in my hand. And I never blamed my mother for making me fat. While watching the movie, sometimes irritated me the way Maggie whined so much about her problems and how nobody saw her for who she was. Again, I have been overweight my entire life, and I know exactly what it's like to have those feelings from time to time. In Maggie's case, though, it seems like she was disregarding her family and friends' attempts to help and acted as if she had no choice in the matter but to just be fat. I feel as if I am starting to change my life around and put the work into becoming thinner, and it's a difficult process, but once you start it, I think it changes the way you look at things.

I agree, I did sympathize with her a lot through this, however, I couldn't stand to see her binge eat.

It's like she's conctributing to her own problem and playing the victim.
