Err, you need to watch this movie again, without missing the subtitles.

IRRC, there was a Japanese soldier in the movie who was in love with a Japanese comfort woman who was sent to the frontline (further inland in China) and said to have died there. He later screwed a Chinese comfort women (probably because the Comfort Stations charged more for Japanese comfort women) who looked like his beloved-- it was the Chinese comfort woman who was shown to have died in the movie.

If the only thing that got you crying was the Japanese soldier and his beloved, then you might be relieved to know that all the characters-- with the exception of the Caucasian characters-- are fictional "composites" with made up names.

You sure won't get many good answers in this system. Go to the public library and ask for history books on this subject. To borrow a good line from Lawrence of Arabia: "Worse, I hope, than you can imagine." Armies still do things like this. We should feel a responsibility to make the world better.

Goodellaa, you have no idea how much I agree with your last sentence... no idea. Seeing The City of Life and Death has only made me more fervant to make the world better. I want to carry on their legacy so that they are never forgotten in the pages of history... it would make the heinous wrongs that they suffered even more despicable if they were forgotten. Soldiers from all over do this to the women and children civilians today, and it needs to stop.
