MINNIE VAUTRIN

Why didn't they list Miss Vautrin in the closing photo credits of the film? She was extraordinarily brave and vital in those terrible days. I believe she committed suicide when she returned to the USA months later; the thought of what had happened was unbearable and she couldn't live with it. Read NANJING REQUIEM by Ha Jin,

Who knows? My guess would be that it was concentrating more on the main characters involved. John Rabe was the only non-Chinese or Japanese person shown at the end, but Rabe is like the Schindler of Nanking. I doubt it's due to the actress being a relative unknown as this is her only film credit. Time constraints? I guess the only person who can answer that is the director. There have been a couple of books about her, but a slew about Rabe. The movie really didn't portray Minnie in a tremendously heroic light--she was more of an inconvenience to the Japanese as indicated in the film. No doubt she was a brave and amazing woman who saved many lives. Such a shame that the horrors she saw and the unnecessary guilt she felt caused her to end her life.
