His execution was no different than the other hundreds of thousands who were murdered in the city. I suspect he and the remaining assistants were done away with so the soldiers wouldn't have to bother with Rabe's people any more. You notice there were other men who were executed before him--he was just one more to them. The Japanese officer who spoke to him before he was shot actually seemed contrite about killing him, but not enough to give him life. I have seen a documentary about Nanking and am reading Iris Chang's "The Rape of Nanking," and they all state that the Japanese soldiers killed the citizens in many different and inventive ways, but sometimes they tired of working that hard and just went ahead and shot them. So hard to conceive.
