Was expecting meh... or worse... a 'great white saviour' sort of disaster. It was neither. Had more complexity/nuance than I expected. Turned into a low-rent Ken Burns movie at the end but I kinda expected a lecture so that was OK.
Anyhoo... worth seeing. Matthew and Moses' 'Child Of God' speech was great.
I give it a 7.

I agree 100%. Gave it the same rating. Read a lot of bad reviews saying it was about a "white savior" as you mentioned. Those were written by people who can't put politics aside. If you can do that, you'll like it.

A middling actor? Mcconaughey's fantastic. Never seen True Detective, Mud or Killer Joe? I got interested in him when he was cast in Dark Tower and caught up on the McConnaissance.
So who is a good actor in your view? Can't think of anybody doing work as compelling or risky as MM. Fassbender came close but looks like he's sunk into schlock now. Can't imagine any other actor pulling off Newt half as well.
