Chinese ship technology and the 66-yard high Buddha

Curious; I know this time period is one of the highlights of Chinese history (and should make the West revisit what it means by the "Dark Ages") but does anyone know if their ships were quite that advanced yet? Always thought those big ships came about the mid-second millennium. And I hope the Tangs had a good harbormaster given the volume of traffic we saw there. But it did make for a pretty scene.

And, that Buddha--a lot taller than 200 feet, no?

It made for an incredible scene! Everything in the film felt overwhelmingly massive. I was so glad to see something that took my breath away like Detective Dee did. It was a bit zany, quite exciting and made me want to get up and start kicking deer. Actually, it did make me feel like I was almost running around along with them instead of sitting. Nice!

Nah; it's completely made up BS.

Cutty Sark-style Clipper ships a thousand years before the West? Did they also sail to Maine for the trees for those massive masts? <laff> (Apparently it was imperial decree: pine for ships, ricepaper for house walls.)

If only their fake beard technology was as advanced.

Disparate peeve: you know, just once I'd like to see the Chinese make a big budget epic that isn't saddled with the ubiquitous goofball wire-fu gimmick.

theres actually really strong evidence.... as in navigation maps, that the Chinese sailed to The Americas hundreds of year before Columbus, who do you think invented the compass?

Sailed to America on their superships, eh?

No, really, that's wrong; and there's zero -- hear me: ZERO -- evidence to show for it.

Even if various fast-buck artists are writing books and dowsing Oregon beach dunes to sell the rubes on it.

To the OP: yes, the Buddha looked at least ten times 66 yards in height!
