Plot problem

*** Spoilers ahead ***

There's something that doesn't make sense to me or got lost in the translation. Dee is released from prison on the advice of the deer/chaplain. But as we later find out, the chaplain's voice is Jing'er, who shows her discontent and even tries to dissuade the empress not to take (her own!) advice to release Dee. Is that a case of schizophrenia or a major plot hole or what?

reply

Neither! (SPOILERS!)

Bear in mind that the Empress knew that Jing'er and the Chaplain were the same person - that's why she told Dee to stay away from the Heavenly Monastery and claimed the Chaplain was on a sabbatical and not to be disturbed.

The Empress cooked up the plot to release Dee from prison to solve the murders. She ordered Jing'er to pass on the message as the Chaplain to make it look to the court as if the release of Dee had been divinely ordained - otherwise her reputation might have been sullied with the court if it looked as if she was releasing a known dissident. Jing'er did as she was told, but that didn't stop her from privately expressing her misgivings about Dee's trustworthiness.

Makes perfect sense!

There is only one thing you need to know about Kung Fu movies: everybody will fight everybody. Sometimes the reason is in the plot. Rarely, it makes sense.

This movie was so convoluted and the plot twists towards the end would have made M Night Shamalan blush. Could have been a decent movie but the story didn't feel cohesive and was all over the place. The tv series was a lot better. Still waiting for Tsui Hark to make a sequel to Seven Swords; now that was a good film.

reply

Nah, it all made sense....

Oh good, it isn't just me. I thought maybe something was lost in the translation. Don't get me wrong though, I liked the movie. I just kept rewinding the DVR over and over.
