Couldn't believe the world it was set in. Just me?

It's a while since I've watched this but after reading there's a prequel I thought I'd come on here. I watched the film a while back as I really liked the directors once upon a time in china series with Jet Li but this film didn't work for me.

The real problem I had was the world it was set in and the fact we were thrown into it without any ideas, explanations etc. I have no problem with SC-FI, supernatural etc. but stuff seemed to happen very randomly without explanation e.g. talking animal, someone changing their face etc.

Maybe it's just me and I should have watched the film open minded. Did anyone else have this issue?

No. It was between fine and acceptable.
A nice and interesting history-KungFu-action-detective-crime-politics-thriller-fantasy movie.

This sucked: The end reminded me of the communist party of China: Strong Empress/Imperatrice good for China, strong central committee of Communist Party good for China.

Detective becomes loyal to the leaders.
Rebels bad, rebels and regime critics must be destroyed.

the film explained that the talking animal was actually a ventriloquist's trick and the shape-shifting was due to delicate manipulation of accupressure points. perhaps watch the film again with the relaxed approach that 'it's just a film'
