Did the beer scene really happen?

Do you interpret the exchange with buying the teenagers beer as real or a daydream? He is shown in the same position on the bench in front of them before and after, and I think either could make sense. He wants to be a teenager again, but the closest he can get is a transaction with strangers that use him while he stands there awkwardly (boy, was that part painful to watch.) He could have found this out in actuality or just looked at them and known that's how it *would* go. What do you think?

That's a great take - I hadn't considered that. I agree with you however that it was incredibly 'painful' to watch as the kids ignored him totally, and the #1 kid kept handing
out the beers, and everyone lite-up, and NO ONE looked at him. Ouch!

the answer is yes it did happen because in the first shot they do not have paper bags filled with alcohol and in the final shot when it cuts to him in the same composition as the early shot they do have the paper bags filled with alcohol

if they didn't have the paper bags filled with alcohol in the final shot then i'd either agree with you or assume they botched the shot/made a continuity error
