I can certainly understand a mother's instincts taking over and making her change her mind--with heartbreaking implications for the adoptive parents--but wow what a scam opportunity for unwed pregnant women.
Step 1) Get knocked up
Step 2) Get hopeful adoptive parents to pay for everything
Step 3) Keep the baby
Yikes!
I've heard of young pregnant women scamming prospective adoptive mothers. However, I am assuming that most of them AREN'T trying to scam someone. It does happen, the young mother changes her mind, and it's heartbreaking for the adoptive mother. In the movie, you could see that it was the grandmother's influence that led to the mother changing her mind. Plus, things are different once the baby is born and the mom can actually hold the infant in her arms.

I was a birth-mother - that doesn't really happen that way.
Usually the agency (in USA at least) has medicaid pay for the birth. There isn't that much the agency pays for for the birth-parents.
