I am a very big anime fan and especially these kinds.

This movie was great but it let open some questions for me.
Why did they need that boy? couldnt they just take some other boy same age?

And i wanted to know more about the western who was raised in the ming dynisty.

overall i gave it an 8.

Iff you liked this anime movie and want more of these kind of movies/anime series. i made a list of serie's/movies i really liked and gave 7+ ratings to.

Samurai 7 (mix of samurai culture and futuristic stuff Great storie!)
Samurai shamploo (very nice drawings and action scene's)
Rurouni Kenshin (serie and movie)
Afro samurai (bit like samurai shamploo but then USA made and voices of known USA actors very good serie btw)

they needed that kid because hes kinda like the chosen one sorta thing... noone else would do, it had to be him...atleast thats the way i understood it.

did the guy die at the end? it would have been nice to have thought he lived and those 2 had some great adventures after the movie, but the very last shot showed his blood dripping out into the snow, and if every shot in an anime means 'something' and there are no random shots, why would that be the last thing we see - especially after the guy said his wounds were ok... kinda sad i think if he didnt make it.

Belief in a supernatural source of evil is unnecessary -We alone are capable of every wickedness

I think he din't make it cos they couldnt see the town yet.

And he was falling asleep then the camera turns around(iff it was a camera)
And you see the blood dripings meaning he was near dieing cos of bloodloss (cos i think they prob rided already some time)

but you cant be sure 100% cos the boy said they would be soon @ the village (where there was a medicine man)

This kind of thing you never know only iff some sequel comes out.
Iff not he prob died:P mine conclusion.

and it adds some drama to it. makes it a strong ending

First off, I just wanted to say that this is the best movie I have seen in a while. It was nice to finally watch one again that felt worth my time.

Anyway, as sad as it is, I also believe Nanashi died at the end. Throughout the movie, he is basically teaching the kid to be more self-sufficient. There is also mention of not being dependent on someone else. By the end of the movie, I got the sense that the boy could fend for himself (still with the help of his totally awesome dog of course). =)

In that final horseback scene, I got the impression that Nanashi was hurt badly, regardless of what he might say to the boy to keep him from worrying. When he asked about the village, I think he knew he was at his limit (he was a trained warrior who would have a good idea of his limits after all). I think he knew he wasn't going to survive if they weren't near the village by that point.

Also, the creators could have just as easily left the blood out of that last scene, but they didn't. And as someone mentioned, it was most likely significant. Also, during that final fight scene, he was obviously bleeding badly from his leg. It could possibly be that his femoral artery was cut. However, it is still anime, and you can never be sure how much blood spray and blood loss is going to be fatal. =)

However, another element that convinces me that Nanashi didn't make it is his past. That last act he performed as a volunteer was a terrible one, and it is not uncommon in anime for a character to obtain redemption for an act like that through self-sacrifice, in this case giving his life to save the boy.

All that said, if they want to make a sequel where he lives, I definitely won't complain. ;)

Edit: I forgot to mention, thanks for the list thrsten. I have seen most of those, but I will certainly check out the ones I have not.

Nice explanetion.

I totally agree with you proball1 .

And have fun watching the anime's you are going to see:)

I liked the movie and all the OP's suggested titles are cool too!

Clothing, $85. Earrings, $30. Latte, $4. Getting away with murder... Priceless..!!

reply

i believe our hero needed some time but it seems he couldn't make it in time.

Cuz his eyes were closing while two of them were speeding up and sun was shining like our main guy headind for the another world while he dying from too much blood loss.

scenes like that always impresses me. i felt bad for the nameless but at least he saved one boy.

reply

I personally don't think he died, the tone of the last scene just seemed more optimistic to me.

reply

I've got to agree with you... the ending, despite the blood, was very optimistic. Most likely, he survived.

reply

I think the ending is open for the viewer to decide.
You could say that the blood trail in the snow is showing that he's close to death, or you could just say that he hasn't staunched the bleeding well enough.

I think the story would be more meaningful if he had died though, after teaching the boy how to survive on his own, how to ride a horse, the only thing he didn't teach him was sword play, but that in its self was meaningful, showing that the boy remains untainted.

reply

I think it can go either way. I personally feel he survived too, and Im to the type to want the good guy to die at the end, cept for cowboy bebop..sigh...

That scene had me thinking of a western Shane at the end. Where he was going off on horse back and the kid is like shane, come back shane (my memory is rusty).maybe it is homage to that film.

reply

He didn't die. That was the whole point of the jade taking the brunt of Luo Lang's attack.

Apart from the finale's obviously cheerful end.

reply

he was bleeding but ... like the dog... he might survive... we don't know..... and i think its irrelevant to the story anyway.....!
good movie overall...!!! But I prefer Kenshin OVA. This one is my 2nd favorite.

reply

I truly believe he survived. That was significance of the "treasure" the boy gave him.

While he was injured severely, it kept it from being a fatal wound.

Think about it. Otherwise, the treasure was pointless.

reply

Yes, exactly. The whole point of showing the green vial getting destroyed in the end was to point out that that happened instead of Nanashi's blood spilling in the snow. I mean, he had already killed the bad guy, that final blow could well have been mortal, he would still have accomplished his mission. Instead, we are shown the green fluid spilling from his side vs the blood of his adversary spilling from his belly. That would have made no sense if Nanashi was still going to die. And he did redeem himself for having killed innocents in his youth - by saving another innocent.

Also, of course that the kid still needed him - he was still very small, the only thing his encounter with Nanashi brought him so far (apart from his life...) was learning how to ride a horse. He still needed someone to look after him - just like Nanashi needed someone to do his reading for him and to teach him how to get rid of bad dreams . The encounter had not taught the two of them how to live alone and to not depend on others, on the contrary, the whole thing in the end is to say that there's no way someone would not depend on others, so there's no way someone could live alone. So I'd say that everything points to the idea that Nanashi made it alive in the end.

As to the blood stains in the snow - first, they were not that many, and second, one could interpret that as a bloody path to happiness...

Words, Mr. Sullivan, are precious things, and they are not to be tempered with!

If you go to this http://www.barbican.org.uk/film/event-detail.asp?ID=9606, after the screening there is a live interview with director Masahiro Andô; you can post questions to be asked, so you could find out about the ending. I can't make the date myself, someone else please go and ask him!

For those that liked this I would highly recommend Seirei no Moribit (otherwise known as Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit)

The above is very similar to this film, however it is over a series, VERY good.

OP, you may also like 'Samurai Deeper Kyo', 'Shakan no Shana' and 'The Twelve Kingdoms' (the latter is a bit more fantasy based).

the ops suggestions are also very good, especially Samurai Chaploo, Ninja Scroll and Rurouni Kenshin (otherwise known as Samurai X)

reply

I think the scene is meant to be left open to interpretation. If you feel that him dying would make the better ending, it's made in a way in which you can believe so. But if you would rather believe that he lives at the end, there's really no way anyone can disagree with you. It's a scene that's left up to the viewer to decide the outcome of. These kinds are sometimes very frustrating, but when the true outcome may be something you won't like, it can be a good one as well. I like it.

reply

I also agree that the ending was ambiguous and could be left open to interpretation, but I think that's what makes it such a great ending. Although, if you look closely at the boy's face, you'll notice his expression changes slightly to one of sadness before they ride off. (kudos to the director and animators here.)

"Zombies, man.....they creep me out."

Does beserk count? Because I love Beserk.

reply

thank you for the recommendations OP i shall check them out. ninja scroll is in my dvd collection. loved that film - and this one. fantastic fight scenes. i gave this film 8 out of 10; i took point off as i would have liked to have seen more characterisation of the westerner. what was his back story? what was motivating him?

i am an optimist and i like to believe our nameless samurai survived thanks to that treasure he was given.
