The Fake accents ruined it for me.

Wow! The fake accents were so bad, almost seemed like a really bad SNL skit. Either have it in Italian or English.

reply

mamma mia, bada bing - bada boom , all italians talk like this?

reply

idk i think it is better to have a fake accent than a British accent at least. remember when hbo made that chernobly shit and they were all talking like a bunch of queer brits?! i wish they did fake Russian/Ukrainian accents in that or at least did Murican accents not that gay ass english shit they released it with

reply

Who was the British woman? I think it was the singer during cease and desist.

reply

Agreed.

reply

No. Fake accents are distracting from story. It was good that Chernoble didnt do that. Either hire local actors and do whole movie/show in Italian, Ukrainian, Russian with subtitles or dont force actors to do stupid accents. Because it looks like they are mocking people. Its racist.

Same thing with West Side Story. Instead of hiring real actors from Puerto Rico - Spielberg hired bunch of American and Canadian actors who speak with perfect American accent then forced them to fake puerto-rican accent. It was incredibly racist and ignorant. If you really-really want that accent then hire people who actually speak with it.

I haven't seen this movie, but I agree that movies with actors doing accents look extremely fake 99% of the time.

Perhaps it used to be more acceptable-believable to audiences decades ago, but makes modern productions seem forced and old movies dated... it definitely takes you out of it.

I actually find it more acceptable for a movie with a foreign character, but with a regular American accent, it's less distracting... I believe this is what Tom Cruise and the rest of the cast did for Valkyrie?

reply

Have you seen The Last Duel? It was set in medieval France and all the characters are supposedly French, but they don't do fake accents. They just talk in modern American English.

However, all the names are very French (Jean de Carrouges, Jacques Le Gris, etc.) and they pronounce those names in French. I find it kinda jarring everytime a name is being mentioned. Sounds like pretentious rich people talking about Shannel and Looee Weethong bags while driving their Poozow and Rehnaw, etc.

If they were talking in fake French accented English, the names wouldn't stand out too much. Or maybe if they Anglicise the names into English (e.g., John, Jack, etc.) I'm not sure if it's a good idea though.

I haven't seen Last Duel... but actors doing accents comes across as fake and takes me out of what I'm watching.

reply

You should watch the Last Duel. It is a great movie and they speak English and never apologize for it, and it works perfectly like you are saying.
No need for a fake accent, we know they speak French but we hear English.
This movie ruined every performance with that ludicrous Super Mario accent.

reply

I appreciate the effort and the accents did not take me out of it at all. In fact, great work by the dialect coaches.

reply

Totally right.
What was the idea anyway? That when they speak italian they speak with an italian accent, so they wanted to keep that even when they translated their words?
How stupid and insulting is the whole concept!?

reply

Terrible accents ! Watching it now.

reply

i also found it way too distracting.
coupled with actual italian phrases just didn't make sense.. oh well

reply

I agree the Italian accents here are bad. But people were criticizing the Chernobyl mini-series choice to keep all the actors original (British) accents. It seems the only choice that would avoid all criticism is to film stories in the native language, using fluent native-language speaking actors, and subtitles.

My choice in this would have been to let the actors use their native accents (mostly American in this. Have the others use more American intonations).
