Similar concepts are (500) Days of Summer and Comet, though I will admit the acting in Blue Valentine is much better.

Probably a bit late now for the OP, but when this film first came out, quite a few people (including myself) likened it to the French film 5x2: both tell the story of a romance in an episodic structure (5x2 consists of 5 key moments in the couple's story told in reverse order), and leave the viewer to flll in the blanks.

I recommend "The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby" (Them) (2014). It's a very realistic film and the acting is excellent. Very similar to "Blue Valentine". Enjoy.
