Cindy Never Loved Dean, she just liked Bad Boys

Just watched Blue Valentine and it's pretty clear after my second viewing that Cindy was into good sex but not a good marriage. Dean was someone who was so faithful and loving, and also able to get her out of her comfort zone. But she was pretty uptight for ninety percent of the relationship. She wasn't flexible, she couldn't even have a good time when he got her that hotel room. And she liked bad boys. Hence her past relationships had all been with frats who laid the pipe well but didn't do much else.

There isn't one moment in the movie where she truly seems to warm up to Dean, save her first encounters with him. Other then that she seems to be biting her tongue. Her telling him he had so many talents and prospects was a gentle way of saying "I'm not in love with you."

She also was an idiot to allow that doctor to hit on her and then get away with terminating her after he said the only reason he was promoting her was so he could date her. That should have been taken to human resources.

Poor Dean. Lacking education but possessing a passion for life. Look at the way he handled moving people's personal belongings. He cared about others and despite his bad boy image, he was a softy at heart. And he had every right to be jealous when she ran into that pimp at the grocery store. Who wouldn't?

The problem was Cindy never tried to make the relationship grow because she didn't care. She was young, working and wasn't that interesting. This could also be a flaw in Michelle Williams, who is suffice it to say- a VERY vanilla actress. She barely could give Marilyn Monroe life, let alone this character. I think a different actress- like Natalie Portman or Anne Hathaway- would have given this role a little more life (and no I wasn't going to say Jennifer Lawrence because sorry, ain't a fan). This was 2010.

Gosling however is fantastic and a very erratic and strong actor- so he was able to give the Dean character more personality. He should have been nominated along with Williams.

Over all I liked this movie a lot- it def was about class systems too. He was literally a BLUE collar worker; notice the symbolism for blue paint on his fingers and him being a mover. She was a nurse and her family obviously was not impressed with Dean's limited education background. But at the end of the day I felt he deserved better. She was just a snob.

I totally agree with you, I thought Cindy was the problem in the relationship not Dean and she was wrong to blame him for it. Notice she wasn't even very motherly to Frankie which showed how harsh she was as a character. I found it difficult to watch as I felt Cindy was the wrong person for Dean to fall in love with.

I agree with you both. He wasn't educated but he was no way a deadbeat, I loved his character, what he did for poor Walter and then her told you everything you needed to know about him as a person!

I am not keen on Michelle Williams as an actress and haven't been since Dawson's creek so i also wonder if it could have been a better portrayal in someone else's hands. Given the circumstances surrounding the shooting of the film, you'd have thought she might have managed to imbue the performance with some poignancy but she just wasn't very sympathetic as a character.
