Aemond…

You know I was rooting for the kid, I thought that was a feel good moment the runt getting his own dragon, having a lot of guts but what followed just ruined it for me. The kid is a c*nt! Here I was thinking he was going to be the sensitive one but c’mon he was WAY out of line,! Bashing on his cousins, hitting the girls, trying to bash his cousins head in with a rock, I mean I thought he was going to be noble but he wound up being worse than any of them. No way was he in the right, if not stopped I thought he was going to kill the boy. Rhaenyra was right, Alicent did show who she really was by demanding the eye of her child in return.

You have all those witnesses vs Aemond & who are you going to believe? The girls have their father Corlys & the boys have their mother. The king was a stand up dude, he did the right thing & tried to put it to bed. Aemond deserved 100% what happened to him & no I’m not heartless but hey he asked it. He’s got it to kill in him more than anybody. What do you all think?

Why in the hell would Viserys bring back Otto as the Hand? You know the guy was loyal but due to how he was treated you couldn’t trust him THIS time around to be that way again & now you invited a schemer into your household. Along with his daughter the queen God knows what he’s cooking up. King or not tell me that Viserys couldn’t be THAT freaking stupid.

I”m confused about Ser Christian. Who was he getting ready to obey? Rhaenyra or Alicent? That scene wasn’t clear. Plus it took Daemon long enough to intercede, I’m not sure what he was going to do & when. He stopped Ser Christian but I’m not sure why him. Good episode though. This one was brutal.

Everyone is a cunt in this show, nobody is likeable...everything is "morally grey" which just makes everything samey and boring.

reply

Welcome to the Song of Ice & Fire universe, where every single person is morally grey, including Ned Stark, Catelyn Stark, Tyrion Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen, King Robert I Baratheon, Tywin Lannister, Podrick Payne, Ser Ilyn Payne, Maester Qyburn, Grand Maester Pycelle, Arya, Sansa, Brandon, blah blah blah.

Just don't like a character too much, because they tend to get killed off.

reply

Was Ned stark morally grey? I always thought he was good to the point of massive idiocy.

He was stupid as all hell, but he was clearly good.

Same with Podrick. Dude was loyal and never did anything to anyone. GOT had a few honorable characters.

reply

Ned was good. Very honorable. However, he never told his wife about Jon's true parentage resulting in his wife tormenting Jon verbally and mentally for decades, treating him ill while Ned looked on. All he had to do was tell Catelyn the truth and tell her to never reveal the truth to anyone, and she wouldn't have.

Imagine lying to your wife everyday for nearly two decades, cause Ned did that!

An honorable husband & wife should share their secrets with each other, he most certainly did not. Catelyn would never have told anyone about Jon's true parentage and she would have treated Jon a lot better growing up.

I don't see Ned's actions in this situation good at all because it resulted in Jon feeling unloved and a 5th wheel, so off to the wall he goes feeling he had nothing else for him in life. Instead of Ned putting Jon to work somewhere in Winterfell, he encourages Jon's trip to the wall, where he will never hold title or a wife.

As for Pod he did that thing that the brothel girls liked, so much that they gave him his coin back, but he never shared his secret with the audience! Where's the honor in that? haha

reply

It was a secret that could get Jon killed if it ever got out. I wouldn't have told her either. Vary's summed it up in one of the episodes. Once more than one person knows, it's basically just information that would eventually get out. If only Ned knows, Jon's safety is from Robert is guaranteed.

I might have clamped down on her spitefulness to my nephew, but a hateful wife is still far preferable than a vengeful king.

reply

And it's a two pronged sword, as hateful wife wouldn't just attack Jon but also be furious at Ned for sleeping with another woman. Catelyn never did find out the truth.

In the books though... we'll see what George ends up writing about Lady Stoneheart.

reply

I just got into some pretty long discussions in here about this topic. Not that I really want to get into another one but yeah, everyone in GoT is morally grey and that includes the Starks.

With the exception of maybe a few, they all have some obvious vices to go along with their virtues and several have no virtues at all.

Instead of making imaginary characters that have no flaws like what we see in most medieval hero movies/shows, Martin chose to ditch the 'good versus bad' narratives and create a more realistic portrayal of humans.

At any rate.. if you care to read the discussions I had about this, here they are...

I might have made a few enemies along the way when I replied to these threads... lol...

I wouldn't mind hearing some opinions about Sansa Stark though. She was a difficult one to figure out in my opinion...

reply

If I recall GOT started out with Ned beheading someone who was innocent. Can't remember why, maybe trespassing, but didn't like him that much, and plus - he was stupid in addition to mean and cruel.

reply

That guy Ned beheaded deserted the wall.

reply

Just watched it again ... it's true.
Still, cold blooded, and he did not listen to the guy too.

reply

No you're completely wrong. He was a member of the Night's Watch and he deserted and the penalty was death. There was no doubt about it. Ned did his duty as Lord Stark and carried out the execution personally according to House Stark custom.

reply

Mean and cruel? What version of GOT were you watching?

reply

I agree that it lacks likeable moral characters to root for. Ser Christan seemed like he might be a pleasant fellow, and then he goes and bashes someone's head in in a fit of rage and jealousy. Aemond went from being the young quiet bullied boy turned bully himself. Alicent seemed nice enough in her younger years and is a bitch parent now. The Valeryan wife of Daemon seemed ok but she has quickly exited the picture. Anyone else is just hungry for power and malevolent in their own way. Where are the Samwell Tarly's or Podrick's? The nicest characters left are the dragons. In fact it isn't just that they aren't morally nice characters, there aren't many personalities like there were in GOT.

reply

That is generally the reality of all people, regardless of their online personas or even face to face interactions.

reply

Criston was probably going over there to break it up and remove Alicent from the situation. Viserys is starting to go senile, he called her Aemma in a previous scene.

reply

Well I rewatched it again a couple of times & when Alicent commands him take the eye of one of Rhaenyra’s sons he says to her “I”m here for your protection my queen”. Meaning he was there to keep her from harm, but he wasn’t going to be used by her to harm any of Rhaenyra’s children. Which is kinda dicey for a knight to tell his queen that, in front of his king what he is or isn’t going to do or obey. But I guess it was his way of telling her if she needed him he was there but he wasn’t going to harm any children even by her command.

reply

Cole is a knight of the Kingsguard. He wasn't going to put out a prince's eye on the orders of the Queen when the King is in the same room saying "no, stop, everybody chill".

reply

Ohh, he would do it, for sure. But cutting the eye out of a kid, which is higher in succession (Rhaenyra is #1, so her sons are Nr 2 and 3) as any of the queen's kids in front of the king is nothing anyone would survive. Alone because of this, the scene was ridiculous. Yes, it was a family fight, but the queen attacking directly the rightful heir and hurting her would be even for the queen at least problematic and nothing I would expect to fix with some cuddling with the king. The king's guard should also protect the rightful heir, so they not directly jump between them would be dishonoring any of them. But the king's guard under Westerling is just totally shit and Cole succeeding him just make it worse. Compared to this kings guard, the one under Queen Cersei is decent.

reply

I don't know about directly jumping in as a King's Guard. With the way Westeros politics play out the person you draw a weapon on might end up on the throne(or at least the immediate offspring of who you draw the sword on). That is a lose lose situation for the King's guard. Better to be ready to respond to whatever the King determines is the correct action, until then, frozen and indecisive sadly seems like the King's Guards best move.

reply

Agreed. Kid is basically Joffrey on dragonback. Not a good combination.

reply

In GOT, when one of the old maesters at the Nights Watch was telling Jon how when the Targaryen rein ended, how the children were taken & killed, I think he was supposed to have been Aemon(d) Targaryen but I could be wrong though. But then again that has to be wrong since this is 200 years before then. This kid couldn’t have lived over 200 years. So now I”m confused.

reply

The old guy in GoT is not born yet. I noticed they use a lot the same names in this show (books too I suppose) as they do in GoT. Aemon in GoT is the great grand son of Rhaenyra/Daemon Targaryen, I think....

Here's the family tree for Targaryens. If you scroll down, you'll see the old guy shows up later on.

Thank you stickman. I’m not a expert in this stuff, so this helps a lot! Again thank you much!

reply

I re-watched the sequence. He was attacked first, pushed her aside.
Attacked with a punch, punched back, was attacked again, defended again, then all 4 pummeled at him when he was down.
4 against one. He picked up a stone but showed restraint in using it even when attacked with a knife.
He may be an asshole but he's right to defend himself here.
And afterwards he didn't even whine about it, but said it was a fair fight.

reply

Did he say it was a fair fight or a fair trade? I think he was only talking about getting the dragon.

reply

Fair enough.

reply

I don't know if that was intentional word play, but it made me laugh.🤣

reply

I didn't think about that distinction before you mentioned it, but I think you may be right.
The "fair enough" was indeed wordplay :)

reply

I'm team Aemond at the moment. Those kids played a sick joke on him with that pig/dragon thing.

Although, I don't think the girls had anything to do with that joke but they attacked first, Aemond had to defend himself.

reply

Its a sticky situation without knowing what proper protocol/tradition would have been. The girls believed they had someone steal something that belonged to their mother, on the day they buried her. There was no hint at the girls having anything to do with the pig, so I think we can easily assume they were innocent of that.

I agree with the OP that until this point I thought he was to be the better child of the spoiled brats we have seen.

The problem with this story isn't that all of the character's are grey, its that the worst instinct is unchecked by any moral compass. For a large amount of the characters its ambition, and only ambition that drives their actions. For the children it appears to be cruelty without a glimpse of remorse.

Daemon seemed to at least outgrow his ambition, but there are signs that the fire has been re-lit in him. I'm enjoying the telling of the story, but I suspect this show will lack the re-watchability of the original. I also think it has a short shelf life with this model of story telling. I doubt this style can keep interest past 2 seasons at best.

reply

Fair assessment, coldofwinter.

It's probably too early to pick sides in this little conflict. I think this scene was mainly there to keep the story moving closer to what is inevitably going to be a war between a few houses and I suppose that's when the real story begins.

So far, I haven't been overly thrilled by the show, I think it's been okay. As I stated in a different thread, I'd give it about a 59 out of 100 right now. It's tolerable but nothing to write home about. I wouldn't tell my friends "you gotta see this" but I have with Game Of Thrones...

That could all change when the war starts... it could be some thrilling stuff.

reply

On a side note, I don't think I have ever seen anyone talk about it, but is it possible that when a Targaryan bonds with the dragon they somehow transfer some of their personalities? It would explain the somewhat strange change we see in Aemond. It also might be how the madness enters their blood lines so easily.

Anyway, just a thought when I was thinking about our discussion.

reply

I think there is some kind of kinship with dragons but I can't explain it in detail. I guess the books go into more detail about dragons and Targaryens and I suppose Starks have some kind of connection to dire-wolves.

And Bran had a connection to ravens... etc...etc...

reply

That whole scene with Aemond on the beach at the same time as Rhaenyra and Matt Daemon was so dark I couldn't work out what the hell Aemond was doing there. Then I thought maybe he might be the town perve trying to spy on Rhaenyra having sex. But no he was after the dragon and must have decided to take the long way around.

reply

-Aemond got a dragon and immediately went from softie to dick. But are you surprised? Everyone on this show is pretty much some type of prick.

-I was confused for a sec when I saw Otto as the Hand. He was just sorta there. But if anyone is trying to get the throne, it's him. I know he was happy with that move.

The only thing about Ser Christian is how he's not aging. We've seen 2 time-jumps, and that fool hasn't changed at all.
