... what "bumping" is?
It means posting replies just for the purpose of bringing the thread back up to the top of the list — in this case, so that newcomers to the board will see the thread.
...
I'm not any kind of expert or authority on these boards, or on the subject of 'netiquette' (etiquette in online communications). This is my personal view regarding bumping:
I presume that those of us who have repeatedly bumped this thread would all agree that we do so because this thread serves a useful purpose — answering an often-asked question about Charlie's appearance in the episode "Unearthed".
I presume that those of us who believe that bumping is warranted in certain instances such as this, remain nonetheless careful to appropriately limit our use of the technique.
I think we're all aware that unwarranted, inappropriate, excessive, useless or selfish bumping is to be avoided. Inappropriate bumping could adversely disrupt the normal flow and priority of conversations — that's certainly not the intent here.
(It may also be worth noting that some other forums provide another solution — a way to create so-called 'sticky' or 'pinned' threads, which would automatically remain arranged at the top of the thread list. ... Currently, IMDb doesn't provide that ability. Bumping cannot really substitute for it. But we are bumping this one thread intermittently to keep it near the top.)
As I said I'm no expert or authority on the matter, and I don't speak for anyone but myself; the above is just my view on the matter.
