An Australian movie?

A movie supposed to be set in mainland USA but filmed in Australia.
A movie in which the predominant Australian cast speak in USA-twang.
Despite the mainly Australian cast and production crew a leading American actress is used for the main role.

Here's a thought: Why not make and set the movie in Australia, use Australian actors in all the lead roles and speak as Australians rather than Americans?

Here's a guess: maybe they wanted to sell a few copies in the USA.

But I agree. A bewildering movie. A very unfocussed narrative line. Unsympathetic character development. Genre defying. Basically just not very interesting. One wonders how this type of movie gets funded.

I couldn't agree more. I actually looked this flick up on IMDB just to see if anyone else had the same complaint. Right when I saw the American flag at the beginning of the movie, and saw 'New South Wales' and 'Australia' in the credits, I thought, "Huh?"

I'm from the US, but I could hear the Aussie accents creeping through during the whole film while they were trying to talk 'American'. It's really very distracting. It breaks the illusion, and you can't concentrate on the story.

If you really want Geena Davis so bad for your Aussie-financed movie, just have the family's mom be an American who married an Aussie and moved down there.

[ I do like Australian movies, though: just want to give a shout-out for one of my favorite movies of all time, "Lantana"! ]

it is an autobiographical piece by an american writer. that's why it was set in america. and i believe at one point they tried to film in america, with an american cast, but got better funding in australia.

i too could hear the australian accents peep through. thought they did a relatively good job though. i wasn't wholy impressed with the overall look of the film - found most of it unconvincing and fake. but it was okay. definitely an indie.

I went along to view the film as part of the AFI (Australian Film Institute) screenings. I kept thinking 'How is this Australian?' I was waiting for the family to move to Australia or something.
Overall, I was very disappointed. This was in no way an Australian film!
