I'm sure this has been covered, but bear with me ..

Why does he need so much protection and a handler?

I think I missed the very first episode, but I've DVRed the rest ... and I just started watching them all this weekend.

Thanks for clearing this up!

In the first episode, Rachel tells a policeman who asks the same, that a year ago an (unspecified) extremist group tried to blow up his car and adds: "You want to see him blush? Ask him where the shrapnel is", which means he was hurt. I keep wondering how much use Rachel would be in that kind of attack, but there you are...

Much appreciated!

Thanks, Doris - I also missed the pilot! :) I'm not sure I like the series enough to go out of my way to find it, either.

They've never followed up on Rachel being Hood's bodyguard in the US version - not like in the UK version, where Rachel's always behaving like a bodyguard by going into Hood's hotel rooms first and checking everything, giving Hood a "Panic Button" that sets off a LOUD alarm on her belt if he pulls it, and chewing him out whenever he puts himself in personal danger. I keep wondering what Rachel's job is supposed to be in the American version, besides "Babelicious Sidekick".... :/

Lemler & Marvin - Hood doesn't need a FBI Liaison, given he's a close friend of the Director, and he's not played as absent-minded enough to need a handler either. Patrick Stewart's Hood in the UK version - now THAT man needs a handler, desperately!

I had the impression that he has a handler because he is not an FBI agent, rather a consultant with expertise in a lot of unusual science, so he needs a liaison.

Plus, like any stereotypical uber-genius, he's a bit absent minded
