I knew this was going to be bad when...

...early in the film, one of the characters mentions Night of the Living Dead. The writer couldn't go 10 minutes without making some reference to a film directed by the father of the guy who directed this piece of crap. I turned the movie off right at that point and went to bed. I watched the rest of it the next night and it was even worse than I thought it would be. Avoid.

Most scripts are written long before a director is even attached or thought of, so either it's a crazy twist of irony, or the director probably added it himself, especially since it is his dad's movie they reference. Romero is also quoted all over saying how he changed things to make it what he wanted.

reply

...or the director probably added it himself, especially since it is his dad's movie they reference.

That's what I'm afraid of and that's the thing that bothered me. It's such and obvious reference in a movie that already wasn't terribly original or any good for that matter.

reply

Sounds like Romero just did whatever the hell he wanted, which is why the movie is what it is. Too bad.

ROMERO QUOTES BELOW

"I have made a few drastic changes and recut the film recently."

"I shoot what I like to shoot and I go down rodes in my horror films that disturb me. I work very hard, its all I can do, to keep the film true to what I want it to be."

"This is the first film where people are going to really see what I can do and I am hoping that fans will like what I have done with Staunton Hill."

reply

Ugh. He sounds completely full of himself. It seems as though he has no idea whatsoever just how bad his movie is. But as bad as the movie is, I'm curious as to just what "drastic changes" he made and how exactly he recut the film. It was probably already a mess and he just made it worse.

reply

Who knows for sure. Whenever a director makes "drastic changes," that means that he decided to say "screw everyone" that was a part of making the film and do his own thing, especially after a film has already been cut. I'll bet the editor was pissed!

The film probably wasn't great before, but his ego probably stepped in and decided to kill the story to focus on blood and gore. I would love to read the actual script and see if they are different. The actors were probably told to forget the script and improv. Then when it didn't make any sense, he just cut it all out and focussed on cutting people up. "Hey look how cool I can make a special effect. It doesn't matter who the characters are, screw them anyway, let's see how cool my gore can be."

It seems that Cameron was watching way too many films produced by Michael Bay. As for the line of script for NoTLD reference, that was Roundtree, probably thinking for that time frame what was a pretty scary movie and a homage to Cameron's dad. But I will say for Cameron, I wouldn't place him in the spot of filling his father's shoes, I just hope he learns from this film and does better in the future, if there is one.

Maybe you don't watch alot of low budget horror or maybe you just don't get it. This was NOT a piece of crap movie. Flawed for sure, but definetly watchable. Personally this is my favorite genre of horror and there was plenty of blood, guts and craziness to satisfy me. If you're looking for tight plot lines and character driven story then you should stick to books.

reply

I watch low budget horror almost every day of my life and this was definitely a piece of crap. There are plenty of low budget horror flicks that have coherent stories and decent acting...and I'm not expecting oscar worthy stuff here, but seriously..everything about this movie was horrid.

George Romero's quote on the back of the box is a complete joke; "it doesn't get any scarier than this" that is a blatant lie and he knows it...or maybe he's just lost touch with reality, as his last few movies have been pretty bad as well.

oh yeah, well..monstrmacl you have no taste in low budget horror if you like staunton hill.

reply

Staunton Hill is excellent. Don't throw it under the bus just because you don't get it.

reply

What was there to get, really? It stunk. And I usually try to keep positive when watching low budget stuff, but this was just awful. To me it just looked like a low budget that tried too hard to be something it wasn't.

Besides which, let people have their opinions, and at least do them the favor, of arguing your views properly, instead of just tossing mud.

I didn't like it either, however I will say it was better than KOTTENTAIL.

Why do you care that he paid tribute to his dad? Regardless of whether the movie sucks or not.

reply

I bet the FULL quote went something like this... "Watching my son fail is scary, but It doesn't get any scarier than this" or something lmao

lmao, stfu you sound like a twat. The movie sucked. Just because it has a lot of blood and what-not doesn't make it a good movie. Maybe YOU liked it, but don't go telling people to go read a book as if you're the only person who knows what a good gusty horror movie should be like.

I gotta agree I hate it when there's references to old classic horrors like that.
