The President and her brother

The sequence showing the Presidential debate in the first episode makes it clear that the election that was approaching was the general, not part of the primary campaign. It was stated earlier that the brother was the Republican candidate, indicating that the current President, the VP who succeeded Sheridan on her assassination, must have been a Democrat. So this must result in one of three highly improbable possibilities: either President Sheridan was a Republican who selected a Democrat as her running-mate, or Sheridan and her brother were in different parties, or the brother switched parties after the assassination and then immediately secured the Republican nomination for President.

So which is it, and in what possible universe does it make sense? It was also stated that President Sheridan was a dove whereas her brother was a hawk, which would seem to lend some credence to the second possibility, but two siblings existing as high-profile politicians in different parties is unlikely enough even before we consider that their father had also been a US senator.

Can anyone think of any real-life political dynasties involving family members in different parties? The closest I can think of is the Roosevelts - TR was a Republican and FDR a Democrat, but they were of different generations, and their relationship several times removed.

They were obviously in dif parties, the President a Dem. and her brother a Rep. I agree it's not realistic, but not much in the movie is, so...

In Denmark, where I'm from, this sort of thing isn't at all uncommon. We have MP's from different parties who are married and it's quite common that the children of politicians join different parties than their parents.
I mean, my political views are very different than those of my parents and grandparents, and while my sister is more inclined to agree with me, she would still be in a different party.
So, while still keeping the differences between Europe and the US in mind, the Democrats and Republicans are as two yards of a piece, so why is the scenario that you're describing so unlikely?

I didn't recognize her! Interesting President Sally Sheridan was played by Mimi Kuzyk www.imdb.com/name/nm0476906 who starred in the 1986 Starman series pilot www.imdb.com/title/tt0709409

I just watched it and that was the first thing I thought of. They should have made it a primary race for the nomination of the party, but I suppose that wouldn't be quite as noteworthy. It was odd that they just brushed it aside as nothing.

Also why doesn't Colonel Amos ever wear military attire?
