What does hand drawn style mean? The animation and designs for every segment in this movie were hand drawn. A common misconception about animation today is that everything is done by computers. While that's true for a very small number of shows, it is not true for 'Gotham Knight'. What makes 'Batman Beyond' any more hand drawn than this movie?

reply

I agree I'm not the biggest fan of this style of animation. The way people are protrayed in anime just distract a bit from the story to me.

i just dont like this Style of animation, i loved the old 1980s way, like transformers, thundercats, GI JOE. this style is too much like THE BATMAN.

or its bc its too close ot real life. who knows.

Well, given that Gotham Knight was heavily detailed, I'd say that 'The Batman' is closer to the 1980s cartoons than it is to this. Again, they're all hand-drawn anyway. And at least this movie had good animation regardless of the art style, unlike any cartoon from the '80s.

reply

I agree. I liked DCAU animation much better than this anime stuff. Anime style was the main reason I didn't watch THE batman, but I rented this on netflix just to see Kevin Conroy back under the cape.

reply

'The Batman' really doesn't have an anime style AT ALL. What about that show resembles anime?

reply

I beg to differ. Even though I'm not an anime fan or follow any anime, I think the anime style is much, much more dynamic, stylish and artistic than the (I'm assuming) traditional American style you're referring to.

reply

I think it's good to give other animation styles a chance and try to get used to them. Otherwise people will just stick to liking one style, and rejecting all others because they "aren't used to it" or "it feels distracting."

I'm pretty sure that western style animation is distracting and "too different feeling" for some eastern audiences. I believe it's just a case of two sides/styles being a bit afraid of change.

reply

I absoutely hated this animation style that they chose. I couldn't finish the first story before getting completely disgusted with the animation...it's Batman for effs sakes not some damn jap anime. What the HELL?!

reply

First of all, there were six different styles. Second of all, the whole point of Batman is that he's open to other interpretations. People who read 'The Dark Knight Returns' thought the same way because it was a different interpretation. Now that's regarded as a classic. And for using the phrase 'jap anime', I'm fairly certain that you're pretty prejudiced against the style simply because you have some unbridled hatred for anything Japanese.

what are the frank miler comics like? i have not read them but i've hear they are amazing

funny how you think that japanime is being prejudiced when it is a common name for japanese anime, just type in japanime in google.

reply

Anime means Japanese animation. There's no such thing as Japanese anime. By itself its not prejudicial, but usually people use the phrase 'jap anime' in a derogatory manner. Even if this term was not used, anyone who makes such generalizations like that bashing an entire genre tend to come off as pretty prejudicial anyway.

anime means animation. that's it.

No it doesn't. No one uses the term as a stand in for animation. The only animation that is referred to as 'anime' are works from Japan. Even the dictionary defines it as an animation style that originated in Japan.

silly elitist otaku wapanese freak.
you're telling me the word anime doesn't mean "animaton?"

in japan they most certainly use that term as a "stand in" for all forms of animation.

reply

I'm not even an anime fan. I'm just going by what the DICTIONARY tells me. I don't see what bone you have to pick with the dictionary, but that's your problem, not mine.

go look it up in wikipedia.

How many of you actually watched the whole thing? There were several animation styles. I didn't like the style of the first short, but I liked the others.
Besides, if you watch it a bit, you get used to it.

I still think the best style was Crossfire. Bruce Wayne makes a perfect biseinen, then there's the scenes of Batman walking through the flames.

There are many types of "anime" styles.

You all are so ignorant.

To say the animation style is a poor attempt at anime is stupid. Seriously, have you not seen Black & White... the first segment looks exactly like it.

Plus, which anime styles from this film did you like/dislike? All of them? Cos they're all different to some degree.

You people and your generalities and lack of any real complaints or arguments are really getting old.

Sure, the STYLE of art is a matter of taste. But the actual animation is GREAT. To say anything else makes you come across as horribly ignorant. Again, STYLE is different than ANIMATION.
