Anime suggestions?

Ok, i'm not really into anime, but after seeing Gotham Knight, and the Animatrix (few years back) i got interested. I was wondering if anyone could give some good reccomendations.

1) The Ghost In the Shell movies and GITS: Stand Alone Complex TV series. Serious, cyberpunk police drama.

2) Cowboy Bebop TV series and movie. Near-future bounty-hunters in space.

3) Big O TV show. Giant-robot show partially inspired by Batman: The Animated Series.

I would check out some feature film's first.

Hayao Miyazaki's are pretty easy to get a hold of. Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle are excellent.
Princess Mononoke is also good (although a little less accessible). And if you don't mind some dated animation you might want to check out Castle in the Sky (I like it anyway).

Akira is another classic. It is early nineties, but it really pushed the envelope as far as animation quality goes, although it some find it slightly disturbing.

Anime series can vary widely and there are tons to choose from. They got a different type of anime for every genre really.

For starters you might want to check out Shinichiro Watanabe's shows, Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, they are both really good (Cowboy Bebop has a feature length film). Watanabe was involved with A Kid's Story and A Detective Story from Animatrix (Detective Story is similar to Cowboy Bebop).

Some of my other favorites are Death Note (animation, voice acting, and story is amazing, although some find it too 'talky'). Full Metal Alchemist, Bleach (the filler story arcs are kind of annoying though), Vampire Knight (might be hard to find, its really new), Blood+, Neon Genesis Evangelion (I really like the new reworking of it, the main character is kind of annoying though). (If anyone can tell, I do watch Adult Swim
] : ). Xam'd is good. I really like Ghost in the Shell too (which has two series and a couple of movies).

Hope that helps (:

If you liked "Have I Got A Story For You" (the first short on Gotham Knight) you should check out "Tekkonkinkreet" (Tekkon Kinkreet). It's a film done by the same studio, and it's done in the same amazing visual style.

Vampire hunter D bloodlust is the best possible thing that can be recommended. Then Princess Mononoke.

Most anime "classics" suggested here are not really stuff anyone not into anime would generally like.

What I would warmly recommend though are:

- Ninja Scroll (the movie, not the series)

- Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust

- Claymore

- Gungrave

- Death Note

You may want to refrain from "heavy" anime like Ghost In The Shell and Akira if you don't want a "complex movie about existential questions" and dravel like that.
