inter-race-kid

The whole inter-marriage kid thing didn't bond well with my liking. I'm not saying this is a racist way, but more of a "Can't they just make it more authentic?"

Please define what you mean by authentic. I think that would help the discussion.

Ever been to California? or any southwestern state? These days, especially in the more urban areas, Hispanic-White relationships are not out of place at all.

reply

Why the hell is it always about race in the US.

reply

Because it's always about race in the US.

Untrue. There's genuinely little to no racism in London, England. Maybe it's because it's so hugely racially diverse.

reply

Ohhhh back up there. The racial tension is huge in London. It is diverse but not at all integrated which leads to anger among white workingclass and a feeling of not being a part among the young Asian youth. Clashes between the EDL and other groups is a common thing in ENgland and London is no exception.

Hispanics? He's talking about the Head C.O. and his white wife (and their son who got run over)

reply

What's not "authentic" here? Porter with a Latina wife? First, they seemed "authentic" enough from where I was sitting, and second, there was actually a minor point to it in the storyline. Because Porter had to basically stay on good terms with the white prison population if he wanted to survive, it forced him to go against who he is in the real world. More to that, it only added fuel to the fire in terms of the tension and frustration between him and his wife. This is made clear whenever she comes to visit him and he refuses to get into the graphic details of life behind bars with her. It was minor, but it was in there. Just saying, I don't understand your complaint.

shroom said, referring to the OP :
"Hispanics? He's talking about the Head C.O. and his white wife (and their son who got run over)"
If that's the case, then that's petty. First, it had zero significance on the story in any way. None, not even a footnote. Second, Jackson did mention at one point that he was divorced, but it's like who gives a ratsass. Again, petty.

reply

I agree completely. The fact that Lt. Jackson has a white wife doesn't detract from the story at all. If anything, it fleshes out the characters a bit more.

Also, as for the OP's complaint that the movie doesn't depict interracial marriages authentically... I guess he doesn't know that Stacy Jackson is played by Brittany Perrineau, the real life (white) wife of Harold Perrineau. So, how much more authentic can you get than having an actual interracial married couple act together in a movie as husband and wife?

reply

I assumed op was referring to the kids complexion. He looked very dark to be interracial to me too. I don't think op was making any comment on interracial marriage.

reply

I think the OP meant it wasn't authentic because their kid should have looked mixed--not 100% black.

reply

Agreed pfrowsey.

reply

The kid was from the first marriage, duh.

Remember, he mentioned he was "recently divorced".

reply

yeah, are you suggesting that he married a new woman in the meantime that went to the hospital with the kid, but the kids mother just didn't care enough to be there? that was clearly ment to be the mentioned ex-wife

I also reacted a little when it came to the kids color, but it really doesn't matter

but what about the main characters kid? his wife being hispanic and himself - a dark haired white male - how plaussible is it that their kid would be blonde with no hispanic features at all? I mean - the darker racial features usually tend to take over - shouldn't the kid have dark hair and eyes?

reply

Her mom did not seem hispanic so an argument could be made that her father's ethnicity showed more in the kid. Also with the Guards child just because he was with the ex wife or current wife (As the movie is over 3 years if i am not wrong) does not mean the kid had to be hers. The child's mother could have been murdered which leads him to despise criminals.

The kid could have been adopted in both cases as well.
