Favorite recent movie: There Will Be Blood

No, she wasn't.

She could have left him in there to rot and convinced her son he was dead. I think she had a right to be upset with him, anyway. How would you react if your S.O. underwent such dramatic changes and refused to tell you what was happening?

reply

i see both points. i liked her cuz she stuck around til the end but i hated her cuz i didnt understand the money situation. she spent 9 months worth of their money and his business loan and other money too and yet couldnt afford to take care of herself and the kid. there are a *beep* of single mothers who do that every day.

and i know that she had such a terrible hardship but she did seem like a selfish bitch but in other ways i guess she was okay

oh and i loooove requiem for a dream too! killer movie

reply

I thought she was selfish as well. I understand that it was obviously impossibly difficult for her too, but to turn your back on someone you love and had previously intended to spend the rest of your life with, simply because of a difficult situation that they had no control over, is incedibly cruel.

I don't understand how she could turn off her feelings like that and leave him in there to deal with the horrendous reality on his own.

reply

Yeah, I had the same thought as the original poster. I'm not sure how they could have made her more empathetic, because her actions had a kind of logic to it. Her fiance went to prison, couldn't tell her how bad it was and "acted like a different person," though as far as she could tell, he was just bald and made friends in prison. That doesn't seem so horrible, especially since she didn't know what was really going on. The audience knew he couldn't tell her because he was scared. She apparently couldn't deduce that.

But the contrast between him not complaining at all after the audience sees what he goes through and his wife whining and whining after we don't really see what her life is didn't bode well for her character. Her reaction would have made more sense if she was displeased with him for killing the robber in the first place. But she didn't think there was anything wrong with that, so her boyfriend landing in prison wasn't his fault, according to her.

Surely the whole point of the wife's story is about how others influence you. When she moved in with her mother, from the very start the mother was trying to split them up. With everything else going on, and worry about money, and Wade and everything, she gave up.

Then towards the end of the movie, we see her move to her own place, and its soon after that that she visits again, and says she will see it out.

It happened to so many people, its crazy. Countless friends of mine and myself personally. I think most people(not just women) are selfish when it comes down to it. They profess their devotion and love when times are good, but thats easy, the real test is when times are bad. The vast majority of people will 86 you from their life the moment things become inconvenient for them.

I was with a woman for 3 years. It was a lot like a marriage. One day I got extremely ill and was unable to work for a month. Her "love" only lasted as long as the situation was agreeable to her. It was no where near as bad as the protagonist's situation in this film, but that was too much for her. This applies to most relationships. People are only interested in that which benefits them and is convenient.

The mob is fickle.

Gold digger. Like a hooker, only smarter.

EDIT: I should mention that just like this film, the woman I spoke of had council(the mother in the film) projecting their own bullsh!t life/problems into the situation. She convinced her I was/had been cheating on her(never happened even once, not even close).

yah how much money do they spend a year???? Wade was only in prison for 12 months and she spends all their life savings & a business loan?

reply

I agree, the guy was in there because he tried to protect his family and got screwed over by the system. When she needed money he said take his business money, sell his truck and house. He cared more for her and their son's well being then his business future.

She should of realized that only thing keeping him going would be getting back to them. She would be the one guilty of throwing him over the edge. It took her son to make her realize the mistake she made.

I know he didn't share what was going on but she should of known he would have to defend himself and do what he needed to protect himself. She was selfish.

I thought this was one of the more realistic parts of the movie. I can see many women behaving the same way. Keep in mind, they are still a relatively young couple, they're not even married. There is logic behind her decision that she needs to move on instead of waiting forever. This is exactly what would happen in most similar situations. Most people are selfish by nature.

reply

I thought the mom was more of a selfish bitch than anything. The husband was screwed over by the law and was forced to survive in an environment that is hostile 24/7. He lost his business, the house, and is now marked a felon, all because the jerk that tried to rob him died on his front lawn. Most people can't handle knowing a family member is living in a day-to-day hell where you have to fight to survive. There are many that simply give up and are either murdered or end up in sex slavery, possibly contracting hepatitis or AIDS. Would you want to pass that on to your family? Your future wife?

Most women just don't get **** done. They sit around and whine and wait for a man to step up and do something. This is not the case with all women but a majority.

How she blew through $10K for the house, let's say $10K for the truck (he's got a $425K house so assume his truck is somewhat nice), let's say $10-15K for the loans in 9 months? Are you f'ing kidding me? PLUS they were 9 months ahead. WTF was she doing for 9 months? Just sitting around getting her nails painted and babysitting?

$35-40K? A person can EASILY live on that ALONG with a kid more than comfortable. Nice apartments can be had for $1,000 easily ($12K a year) and food is not going to cost that much.

Plus, get your BUTT out there and work. I don't care if it's McDonalds, a grocery store... whatever. $8 * 160 hours a month is nearly $1,300 or so with a little health care thrown in. There's your rent after taxes and a little extra. Work at a Starbucks. With tips you can make almost $11-12 an hour. She was hot enough, work as a waitress. She'll roll in tips and prob. make closer to $15 an hour.

Kid stays with the mom and you just single mom it for a while. But no, she sells everything, whines, nearly leaves the husband, and acts like a complete tool most of the movie.

I'm surprised the movie went this route frankly. With all the women empowerment these days, you'd think she would've just managed. I get why they did... amp up the dramatic tension to get him out... but yah.

reply

I agree with your money analysis , not that most women are lame. I guess it depends on the type people around you . But you are very right about her blowing thru the money and saying she can't get a job. Anyone who has access to transportation can get a job.

reply

It's tough for a woman to wait around for 6+ years as a single parent. They arent even married I don't think either, just engaged but even if they were... that's a tough challenge

reply

I hated that prison visit scene when she complained about running out of money and sold the house for a low price. I chalk that up to bad writing, and not really a reflection of women in general or a reflection of her character up until that moment in the film. But I could also see if your fiancé went to jail for three and then six years and appears to join some Aryan gang ... anyone in their right mind would second guess if they should wait and marry this individual.

reply

I think she redeemed herself in the end, but I hated her for most of the film. She only saw him once a week, maybe once a month. Why couldn't she keep it together for another, put on a brave face and show a little support?

I'm a woman, I was brought up by my mum (my dads a scumbag) with 2 sisters, so I feel I know what strong women are really like. But every film has whiny, childish, selfish female characters who don't think of anyone but themselves. It's really insulting

Please consider me as an alternative to suicide

reply

Actually for the most part, I thought the wife was selfless and managed well on her own throughout the movie. I don't know why Wade did not say anything on life in the SHU, but she should not have completely flown off the handle at him, he couldn't control anything with the finances.

If anyone was selfish it was the wife's mother who convinced her to leave him, but thankfully the wife came to her senses thanks to some help from her son.

You guys here trashing and complaining about how selfish women are blah blah, what, are you all single forever-alone's or just faggits?
