2.9?

Ok, I know there's only 10 votes and that the trailer didn't look good at all...I expect so-so acting and a low budget but 2.9? Now I don't know if I want to wait for the english subs or not...

It's not that bad. There are a few bad moments here and there, but otherwise, it's an entertaining movie. I gave it a 6.

The acting is pretty bad IMO. Having seen the anime I was expecting some violent scenes knowing that the movie was based on the first arc of the anime, unfortunaly it never really happened.

reply

There was really only one scene of major violence in the anime, and it was kept in. Were given a more violent view of other scenes, and a lot of moderately violent scenes were also kept in.

What they did is to take Onikakushi-hen from the game/manga/anime and totally destroy a clever horror/mystery by turning it into a campy b-horror flick. Then they ask you to "solve the mystery" at the end? What mystery. I hope they redo this series with good movies like Christopher Nolan did with the Batman franchise.

reply

Whoa now, you just implied that Batman and Batman Returns were bad movies.

In any case, while the film was a weak adaptation, I believe that's partially because part of what makes the series work is how it plays on the audience's expectations of its moe aesthetic, which is lost in its transition to live-action.

reply

Haha. Perhaps I should re-watch those films (it's been a really long time) but as I recall they were fun-for-the-ride action movies at best, whereas Nolan brought the truly dark/brooding/menacing mood into it that (I think) Batman always should be presented with.

Anyway, sure the moe expectation being flipped could be a portion of it. But personally I'm not exactly a fan of either lolicon (which this series has in spades) or moe characters (to put things very mildly with both).

Rika and Satoko have their unique hidden abilities/specialties; Rena is there to alternate between cute and scary, and Mion and Shion are around as twins to confuse you.

imo the top reasons why this film adaptation fails are because
a) it doesn't manage to show the appropriate subtlety (around its clues)
b) cheesy effects and bad acting ruin the mood
