Was the UK TV print made brighter than the US one?

I think it must have been - I already had the US Reg 1 DVD, and already I can see one telling difference: it's the scene in the Spiritualist Library, where the portraits of Selina Dawes and Peter Quick get revealed.

In the US print all you could see of Peter was his eyes and cheekbones; in the UK print, the portrait looks SO detailed as to be in danger of giving the game away!!
