The movie was so painfully dull!

The girl they picked to play Selina was completely miscast. The girl for Margaret couldn't emote well enough and ended up being so plain and boring to watch. I'm only 50 minutes into the movie and I think I might just quit altogether. The movie is dreadful and the two leads have absolutely no chemistry at all. The story is choppy and doesn't unfold as well as it should.

One last thing, the woman they picked to play Helen, Margaret's unrequited love, was so awful to look at and listen to that I wished I were temporarily deaf and blind during the 2 minute scene with her and Margaret.

If you liked the Fingersmith adaptation, you will be sorely disappointed with this one as I was. Just stick to the book, and stay far away.

Yes I totally agree having just finished the book I took to watching the adaptation having high expectations as 1. it's Andrew Davis and 2. TtV and Fingersmith were both made into wonderful adaptations. This though was awful! The acting left a lot to be desired (especially by the girl playing Serena) the chemistry between the two leads was unbelieveably weak - there was not one moment when they were together where I thought they were in love, yet in the book I was hooked by their relationship, line and sinker. The ending was flat, I didn't feel Margaret's pain or betrayal as I simply didn't believe what I was being told, whereas the book left me a mess on the floor.

The script was clunky. There were lines like "I feel a cord of light stretching between us, connecting us" seeming to come from nowhere and were thrown in to quickly advance the story and the supposed "passion" between the two women. The story as a whole was far too rushed and practically all the rich details and depth of the book was lost.

I don't think a single aspect of this adaptation did any justice to the book at all. Indeed I am glad to have read the book beforehand, as if this had been my first experience of any Sarah Waters story I'm sorry to say I don't think I ever would have gone on to read any of her novels, this was just so damaging to her original story which is a superbly written book and a fantastic read.

I recommend the book whole heartedly, this tripe though I wouldn't touch with a barge pole ever again!

COMPLETELY AGREE.

I didn't grow to have any sympathy for the characters for I don't even like them. I think miscast could be one of the reasons. From the beginning to the end, I knew Selina was some sort of crook and Margaret was getting more and more dumb. I never read the book. I didn't feel any attraction between them and was appalled when Margaret exclaimed, "I love her...I love her...I love her...", I went, love her what, love her for being nuts? I don't see how.

It's a dreadful adaptation. I really really should have trusted IMDb and spare myself this time. I was wondering how gloomy London was the entire time, and what kind of lighting/gel they used to achieve it. And may I say how much a non-attractive cougar Vigers is. I also thought maybe even Diane Kruger(because of the physical resemblance to Anna Madeley?) could play Selina better. And maybe that Matt Ross (resembles that Brett Watson) could play Stephen better. And those strange sideburns!!! So distracting!!!! And that Helen is so voluptuous in not a good way. And no one looks appealing, at least not to me. Sorry. They look wrong in this movie.

Where's the Chemistry? Where's the Passion? Why they hook up?

And the ending/opening sequence, exactly like Across the Universe. Like that's romantic! -_-

And where's the supposed character growth and uplifting at the end? Everyone grew worse!!!!

Huge let down. I want BBC.

I'll go back re-watch Fingersmith and Tipping the Velvet now for better visual aesthetic pleasure alone.

I don't intend to be offensive, but I have to defend my opinions.

The cast was in some parts really a mistake.

Zoƫ Tapper? Ferelith Young??? WTF

But I really liked Anna Madeley as Margaret, although the role would have been something a bit profounder.

As Selina I see (maybe) Imogen Poots, Amelia Warner or even Daniela Denby-Ashe.
And as Helen...Sienna Guillory?^^

Mhmmm, I'm not sure.
The chemistry between the actors is so important and can't be judged so bad as an outsider.
BUT, it MUST be some English women, everything else would be a no-go.^^
