Great movie!

I love Miike but to be honest some of his films as of late haven't been my style - what a breath of fresh air to see Detective Story! Interesting concepts, cinematography, spirituality, and Kai Ato in the main role (I think he is a great actor). I'd highly recommend this to anybody who is a fan of Miike or japanese murder mystery movies. This film has classic Miike absurdity, comedy, a great jazz soundtrack, and more.

While I usually love Miike's style, this was just just off the mark for me. Boring characters, annoying/obviously fake police work, bad dialogue, and just an overall lack of specific direction. It wasn't that funny or gory or tense, it seemed to be just a lot of nothing happening spliced with scenes of someone post death... oh well, can't like every movie...

it was a really interesting movie. I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen throughout. the absurdity was cool, the acting was pretty good for the most part, but I didn't dig on the whole tormented artist part of the story. It felt like it was too easy to create this type of story with that as its anchor. the twists and stuff worked out really good though. i would have to rank it more as a good/ semi-great movie.

Kai Ato in the main role? how did you figure that one out?
Kazuya Nakayama was obviously the protagonist/main guy.
